This is the rootinest, tootinest ghost-town west of the Mississippi, and probably east of it too. =) Explore old silver mines, ride a train, and watch dramatic shoot-outs. And now, add letterboxing of the list of things to do while you're there! What other excuse do you need to visit Calico (
http://www.calicotown.com/)?
Directions
To get to Calico, follow I-15 a few miles north of Barstow, and follow signs directing you to Calico. There is a small admission fee. It's best to go in the mornings or in the off-season if you don't want to attract a lot of attention while hunting this letterbox down.
Clue
From the trailhead next to the Calico Candle Copmpany, hike up to the scenic viewpoint. After admiring the view, continue past going back down and curving behind the hill until you reach the sign that reads, "End of trail--Do not go beyond." Now take a look back up the hill to your left. There's a rock wall that ends near the top, and just below it is a dark cubby-hole in which lies the letterbox.
Believe it or not, I actually left the box in plain view, and if you look closely you might be able to see it! Although I left the box exposed, it's still difficult to see because it is pretty dark in that nitch compared the striking sunlit area around it, and I doubt anyone will notice unless they were actually looking for the box. Anyhow, go hike up to the box and nab it! Be careful there aren't any rattlesnakes hiding in the nitch as well, since they do inhabit the area!
If you find this box, please let me know the status of the box as it is very likely that I won't be able to check up on it anytime soon. Thanks!
