Francis A. (Frank) Hamer was a Texas Ranger from 1906-1908. He resigned to become marshall of
Navasota and then moved on to Harris County. He rejoined the Texas Rangers in 1915 and became a legend as he took on the bandits who ruled the Texas border. In 1921 he moved to Austin and rose to the rank of captain. He is best known for his role in tracking down the legendary Bonnie and Clyde. On February 1, 1934 he was assigned a position as special investigator for the Texas prison system, with the expressed assignment of putting an end to the crime spree of Bonnie and Clyde. After tracking them for months, he set a trap for them in Gibsland, Louisiana, and on May 23, 1934, along with other officers, he sprung an ambush that ended the crime spree with the deaths of Bonnie and Clyde. He is buried in Austin Memorial Park, which is located at 2800 Hancock Drive.
Austin Memorial Park closes its gates at 6 pm. So if you go for the box then make sure to get there before the gate closes.
To the Letterbox
Once you enter the cemetery, park in the lot near the office. Once you park, turn around and face the headstones across the road from the office. Look for a No Pets Allowed/No Alcoholic Beverages sign and start walking in that direction. You will pass Kirschner headstone, Wheeler headstone, and Sanders headstone. You will see a large tree with a large set of windchimes hanging from the limbs. The Hamer grave to the left of that tree. There are 3 Hamer graves: one is Frank, one is his son, and the third is his wife. They are all 3 flat headstones. Continue walking to Richers headstone and you will see two double trunk trees right behind the Richers headstone. The box is between those two double trunk trees under some stones. If you get to a pink granite headstone with Spiers you have gone too far.
