This box is in honor of James Michener who wrote the book “Texas.” He also wrote “Tales of the South Pacific” which won the 1948 Pulitzer Prize. He is buried in Austin Memorial Park, which is located at 2800 Hancock Drive. Austin Memorial Park closes its gates at 6 pm. So if you go for the box then make sure to get there before the gate closes.
To the Letterbox
Once you enter the cemetery, you can either head to the office and ask where he is buried, or you can take the road to your right and continue until you see his headstone (along with his wife’s) on a corner towards the back of the cemetery on your right side. There is a tree also on the corner with a bench. The headstone is pink granite. Facing the headstone, look to your right for a headstone for Paprota with a short pine behind it. Look to the left of the Paprota headstone for a crepe myrtle. The box is in the trunks of that crepe myrtle with a rock on top of it.
