Cherry Creek

This letterbox takes you on a brief tour of the small, unique town of St. Francis, Kansas. St. Francis is the county seat of Cheyenne County and is located in the northwest corner of Kansas on two major highways, US 36 and KS 27. It is just over three hours from Denver. Some local annual events include the Stearman Fly-in in early June and the Cheyenne County Fair in Early August.

Clue

1. Start on US highway 36 on the south edge of St. Francis

2. Turn north on College Street. At the turn there is a sign tor a garden ceter on the west side and a gas station on the east side. You will drive past the water tower and the St. Francis Community High School.

3. In front of the high school, turn left onto Washington Street. This is the main street of St. Francis. You will pass Sawhill Park, the St. Francis Community Grade School, and the Cheyenne County Courthouse, which was completed in 1925. Washington also takes you through the town's business district. (We hope you'll stop, stroll along the street, and sample the locally osned stores.)

4. Near the end of the street, turn right onto River Street. You will go past the grain elevators and cross the railroad tracks, which were built in the late 1800's.

5. The street will turn into a dirt road after you cross the tracks. Follow the road as it turns west and crosses the Republican River. Not too far along, the road branches. Stay left (more or less directly west).

6. When, after about two miles, the road ends at a paved highway, turn right.

7. After about 1/4 mile, you will see a sign on the right side of the road pointing out a historical marker. Park in the next paved parking area to the left side of the highway.

8. Stand facing the two red signs that tell about this historical site. To your left, you will see two large rocks.

9. The letterbox is hidden under the back of the biggest rock.

This is a public place, so be discreet whe finding and rehiding the box. Please rehide the box better than you found it. Feel free to contact us if you find an error in the instrucions or just want to let us know that you found the box.
