These boxes are only available when the museum and ship are open for tours. Price $6.50 adult, 12.50 family or free if you B&B on board. Check hours and dates on the museum website. Museum is open year round, ship open end of May to mid October:
http://www.marmuseum.ca/1. The Alex – LB located just inside the museum entrance under the big light on your left. Magnetic box under base, left side facing light. MOST staff know the box is there. Still you need to be discreet as there will be lots of mugglers visiting the museum.
You’ll need admittance to the ship and the self guided walking tour brochure to do the next 4 boxes. Read the brochure to help locate the boxes. Children are not allowed to explore on their own. There will be narrow steep stairs, uneven floors, grease, paint, rust and lots of wind. Fun eh?
Remember port and starboard refer to left and right in relation to the bow, not your left and right - unless of course you are facing the bow!
2. Hatch Wedge – admire the simple but effective technology from the port side of the main deck. Count from the stern to bow, 4th wedge, box is jammed underneath the lip. Replace securely, watch for mugglers and novice staff.
3. Bell Ranger – at one time the Alex would have had a Bell Ranger rescue helicopter . Continue on your tour as indicated on the brochure. You’ll pass under the helicopter deck; continue on to station 7 up the stairs. Head to the starboard railing look to the stern to see a nice view of the heli pad. On your right is a storage compartment, look underneath.
4. Engine Room Telegraph - A nice example of this essential piece of nautical equipment in chrome is here also. Now enter the wheelhouse, stand at the wheel facing to the bow of course! To you left is a cabinet, under the gyro compass. Inside is a little gray letterbox. Continue your tour (as outlined on the brochure) to the electro hydraulic steering engine.
5. Steering Worm LB - Wow! Another huge wooden steering wheel, a 2 man Scots version. Stand at the wheel facing the bow, look down, on the right hand side of the steering worm and you’ll see a little steel mousehole about 3 feet up. Reach in carefully to retrieve the Steering Worm LB pouch. Careful, don’t touch anything else, lots of grease in this area.
Refer to your tour brochure to complete tour and exit the ship.
