Description
When life got in the way, Desi, of DRG/DLG was only able to do limited letterboxing, but she continued to carve. And what a fantastic carver she is! We have come into possession of a large tub of stamps that needed a home, so decided the logical next move was to plan an event that would require stamps. Don Carter is one of the newest state parks in Georgia, and is currently letterbox bereft. So, we've cleaned out Desi's closet and will be loading the park with new boxes. This is a camping/social event. We have reserved a few tent sites in the walk-in camping area. These are primitive sites, no electricity or water, but in a beautiful wooded area. If you want to join us, and want to stay on these primitive sites, PM me, and I'll be sure you have a spot. The cost is $20/night, and we've reserved for both Friday and Saturday. There are only 12 of these tent sites available, which is why we grabbed some extras while we could. Once these are filled, you're on your own to book through the state park website or directly with the park. Sites are limited to 6 people per site, so figure out which of your friends can make it and share a site. For a small additional fee, you can use the shower facilities at the RV camp sites.
Not into primitive camping? Never fear; there are also fully loaded sites, that can be used by either RV's or tents, and cabins.
It's been too long since the last Georgia event, so block the dates on your calendars and let's have some quality outdoor fun.
Reach out to anyone you know who isn't on AQ regularly, so they won't miss the party.
01 May 2017 - Just to clarify - while we hope you'll camp and help us make memories around the camp fire, it isn't required. You can also day trip the event.
Jun 6, 2017: Update and new facts on Cleaning Desi's Closet
I'm glad to see so many of you signed up for the event. There are over 40 new boxes in the park, just waiting for you to come search. Here are a few administrative details to help you plan your fun.
Event Central will be at one of the primitive camp sites, so if you're day tripping, park in the parking lot closest to those. Sites are on a first come first choice basis so we don't know for sure which site that will be, but I'll post the site number here Friday around noon, and we'll have signs. We'll have tables set up with awnings, and a few chairs, but you might want to throw camp chairs in your car. Clues will be available Friday afternoon. For those coming in on Friday, let me know when, and I'll make arrangements for you to have a copy. Trails close at dusk, but that still gives you quite a bit of boxing time. When it begins to get dark, come join us at the camp site. We'll have a camp fire, and day trippers can hang out until 10:00, both Friday and Saturday nights.
Because there is no electricity at the camp site, and because this is a boxing focused event, you’ll be responsible for your own lunch and/or dinner. But, since we have some boxers who haven’t been to a Georgia event we’ll want some time to do exchanges. So, for the early birds, let’s spend a little time getting acquainted between 8 and 9 Saturday morning before you hit the trail. And for the not-so-early birds, we’ll do it again at around 3:00. We’ll make the 3:00 o’clock an Eat, Meet, and Greet, so please bring your favorite snack to share. I’ve added potluck to the event so we can track who is bringing what, but please remember, just snacks. We’ll provide water and soft drinks.
If anyone wants to camp in the primitive area who hasn’t already contacted me, please PM me. I still have one site available that is already reserved. There may be others available directly through the park, but because there are only 12 primitive sites, we put a few on hold to try to be sure no letterboxers would be closed out.
PM me with any questions. I’m excited to see all of you who have signed up. Spread the word to your LB friends, so they don’t miss out.
Jun 23, 2017: Event Central location
Hi, all,
Primitive Camp site #4 will be event central. That is where you can pick up your clues, do exchange, and have a snack Saturday PM.
The sun is shining, so no excuses. See y'all soon.
Jun 23, 2017: Revision to event central location
Event central has been moved from previously posted site, and will now be on Primitive Camp Site 1. There will be signs posted in the parking area and on the site itself. Just keep looking until you find us. :)
