A magnet & a long skinny stick (like a wooden dowel). Had a box in Illinois & almost wasn't able to retrieve due to an extremely strong magnet & tight hiding spot. No long stick so I used 2 skinny markers attached to each other (not ideal but I was in a pinch). They kept coming unattached. In the end we persevered !

One time I forgot my hiking sick and had a golf club available to check for rattlesnakes.

So, you were hiking well? Is that why you were seeking rattlesnakes? That is certainly a way to go hiking sick, or worse.

For Example~ a crowbar on a freezing cold, icy day

We found a crowbar while boxing.
It came in handy.
A box was stashed in a place that collected water, someone had crammed a hitchhiker in the box, the lid wasn't properly replaced and the whole thing was wedged, frozen in a tree notch.

OK Green Tortuga, I'm sure there's a story behind this one!

{In the last month I've seen a bear and a bobcat on the trail. I've also encountered a skunk sleeping on top of a letterbox.

Anything "funny" you might take along for those unexpected creatures? Critter repellant? Bear spray?}

A police shield?

I actually do carry a folding step stool in my car for letterboxing. I have short arms!

Along with that, a "grabber" to reach those boxes that have fallen into the hollow tree trunk. Hot water, hand warmers and a chisel for those frozen as already mentioned

If you want just silly: Maybe nuts to lure protective squirrels out of their lairs, a mongoose for snake control

TMD and I sometimes joke we should have brought her Marine son along for some of those more challenging retrievals, so..a Marine!

Rain boots
very useful this year on the trail in Michigan.
And once on the trail in Wisconsin where the path to a box was
6" deep with water!
...rain boots may not seem funny but the big pink flowers on them are :)

I bring a large plastic trash bag to sit on when stamping in. Helps keep my backside dry when I end up sitting on a wet mossy log , or soggy ground. Plus, if I find any litter on the trail, I can stash it in the bag to dispose of later.

After finding a letterbox, a lovely copperhead slid and coiled up right where the box goes. I guess the box had made that spot warm. ;)

So a snake remover would have come in handy then. Either one of those long polls like a grabber, or a hunky snake remover by occupation. :D

Also a band saw, to saw away the part of the tree that has eaten the box.

Fireant poison would be a plus as well. Those pesky red bodied demons can ruin a trip really fast...

Or a small child--I've seen signs when hiking that say if you see a bear your should pick up small children. I figure that is so you have something to toss to the bear

For all the times creeks and rivers are not listed on maps, and for the one time it was, but we had to ford it to get out of the park in time before we got locked in (dead of winter, two feet of snow on the ground), this pig would like a portable bridge.

And my nano towel

Very small towel, clips onto my pack and is good for cleaning stamps, hands, feet, dogs...

You can't get your ducks in a row if you don't have any.

A telescoping metal backscratcher works well to fish stuff out of holes or retrieve from a high branch, doubles as a weapon to fend off critters on four legs or two. Excluding the metal fork end, it’s about the size of a pen.

Here is an option that is easy to carry.

How about a port-a-potty. So afraid of getting a tick in the nether regions! Always bring 2 plastic trash bags, to wear like waders when walking to boxes with a field of poison ivy between me and the box.

Yes the 2 plastic trash bags is a great idea, I've actually used this method in a field of poison ivy to get to a Box in a purple diamond series!
