To search or not?
Board: State: Alaska

Honeymama and I are heading to Alaska this summer - yayyyyyyyy! After planning our route, I've just begun researching letterboxes that are near our path. From the get go (aka: Anchorage, which is our start point), it seems like a lot of them haven't been found since 2013. What are the chances of them actually being there? I live in Massachusetts, where if a box hasn't been logged in 2-3 years then it's often not there, but I know other parts of the country don't always work that way.

I have a box on the Kenai at Alyeska that is there. Hope you’re headed that way!

We are :D

Still crawling through the clues for Anchorage right now... good grief, we're barely going to spend any time there, and most of it will apparently be boxing.

Yeah up here that just means the couple of locals found it and no one else has tried. If you give some targets and preferred box type (ie longer hike so maybe only a few boxes versus in town among the more tourist areas) I am sure we can help you out with odds if it is still there.

I know nothing about Alaska boxing but...

My rule of thumb for searching for long dormant boxes is checking the clue. If it’s in a highly public, muggle heavy spot (lamp post in front of a restaraunt for example) there’s a chance it’s gone.

If it’s on a trail (for example) under a rock there’s a good chance it’s there.

In our travels we’ve found that letterboxing has dropped off a bit since 2013. So unless we’re in a hurry we tend to search for everything anyway.

Just as a point of reference, the longest unfound box we’ve found was 9 years. It was about 2 or 3 hundred feet from a popular trailhead.

Lots luck. Have fun!

... and you were the last one to find a bunch of them, too.

I've been checking the comments. If you mention trouble finding one, I'm like "Nope! Not possible for me!"

We are also heading up to Alaska this summer!! We are leaving WA in June in our motor home and plan on being up there till September or so. If our paths cross maybe we can do a meet up.

We'll be there from mid-July until the end.

Waiiiiiiit a minute. Was it you that I was accidentally following around Utah last April? I feel like there were a few boxes that I found that someone else had gotten only two or three days ahead of me...

Most likely! We were in Utah late April to May, traveled around the mighty five and finding and planting letterboxes along the way. Looks like I got one of yours in MA back in 2017.

My partner and I full time rv so we get around a bit. Alaska is a bucket list trip for us. Can’t wait to get up there.

Hey, we are about to become full time rvers. I wonder how many of us there are on here. I'd love to know if any my boxes are still there.

I dare say Massachusetts probably gets a few more letterboxing visitors than does Alaska, however, so more attempts and information as to whether boxes are there or not ... ;)

Chances are pretty good that if they haven't been found since 2013, they're still there. There are at the most, 5 or 6 boxers in Alaska and once you've found the boxes, there's no reason to go again. People come here and don't log finds. There's many reasons they may not have been found. Keep in mind too, boxes don't usually get found from September/October until April/May due to snow and ice. Message us before you get here and maybe we can meet up!

If you need help determining which boxes you can get in a short amount of time, we can probably help. I'm not a tour guide, but I can certainly give you guidance. :) I was born and raised here, I know my way around.

I may just contact you regarding some. I've gone through Anchorage and chosen some that sound nice, but we'll be all over the place during our trip, so I need to narrow down my list!

Regarding a potential meetup - Honeymama and I love mini meets or meeting people on the trail! She is much shyer than I am, but enjoyed making some friends at an Oregon event a few years ago, so she always asks if we're going to do something like that again.

Right now I can tell you that we land in Anchorage on 7/15 and pick up our RV on 7/16. Our flight out is on 7/30, and I'm pretty sure we'll be passing through Anchorage mid-trip, too. Maybe we could schedule a mini-meal or mini-trail meet in the middle or at the end!

We do not have an itinerary yet, but are driving our own rv up from Washington. We plan on coming into AK through the northern route from Dawson city to chicken. Not sure if we will be in the anchorage area at that time or not but if we are, totally down for a meet up.

I'm pretty new to Letterboxing, but I've already found three hidden around Anchorage, so there are at least three boxes that are still active! :)

Ahoy Girl! Retirement in the works. i'm sure your boxes are still there. They were very well done. E has done a great job of combing thru the state. i relied on him to do my maintenance. Thanx E! Alaska letterboxers cover the biggest state with the least amount of boxers.

I have an easy find in Skagway that I would love to know is still alive or not. "You Are Here-Skagway, Alaska".

Dirt Monkey is headed to Kodiak for a few days next week. Any you need checked? I don't think I have any ready for planting out there, we're kinda filling up the island, but we're still here!
