I have 53 that are permanent since Dec 1. There are a few still out from the event because they got caught in a few snow storms after the event :)

If it warms up soon... I SO HOPE... I plan on getting about a dozen more to ground by the end date of the challenge...

Of course - about 100 or so temp ones for the event at the end of the month :) Busy, busy, busy

I have heard of snow friendly boxes but do not know what makes them snow friendly.

It means they can still be found even if there is deep snow on the ground. So instead of at the bottom of a tree on the ground, the box would perhaps be hanging from a branch on the tree. Or instead of behind a log on the ground the box would be up on a "wall" of boulders in a niche protected from direct snow that would bury it.

I’ve planted 19 across four states since the challenge began. I have a few sets and a bunch of individuals just looking for the right spot. Since I’m currently traveling along the coast, I’ll get a bunch more of my Lighthouses of....series planted as well.

Wish I could make Geekfest, me and the dawgs used to tromp through Ulmstead on a regular basis back when I lived in Cary, way before I boxed.

Plant on fellow boxers, I’ll get to yours eventually!

I planted 2 and I have 5 more ready to go. Just don’t have a good park/area and probably won’t get a chance to plant soon ( I am on call all this month). But maybe by May. They are NC specific so won’t be planted anywhere else. So they will live here eventually :-)

Thank you for the explanation, MissMoon. I suspected that it might be something like that but did not know for sure.

So reading through everyone's responses, all I can say is "WOW!" I have planted 5 boxes. I have more stamps ready to be planted; I just have to find the right areas. I know I'll make the 10 by May, but 50??!! That's a but ambitious for me. Thanks for the challenge!

Or it means don't plant it up here in Alaska, plant it in Hawaii instead.

IOW, inside the local library.

Living in Florida, you shouldn't even be allowed to post about snow friendly boxes. bahahahahahahahaaaaaaa

Perhaps GT should change it so that if you are in any of the Gulf states, "snow friendly" becomes "alligator friendly". Not that the boxes are near "friendly" alligators, but that they are far enough away from alligator habitats that you don't need a lookout.

I think you need to be in another state to be far enough away from alligator habitats!

BinoBoxer, I planted my new series yesterday, so I met the challenge! Which reminds me...we should plant another box together on our trip!

I've planted 14 permanent plants since Nov 1. They are all in Austin and parks to the west in the Central Texas Hill Country, which is currently ablaze with one of the best bluebonnet shows in the last decade. Stunning! There's lots of activity happening out here - hope folks can come out and take advantage of a whole bunch of new boxes in this area!

I will likely plant about 2 dozen more before May 1. I doubt I will get to 50, but that's OK... I'd rather have a patch than pathtag anyway! :)

Thanks to the organizers for setting up this challenge!

Are they all "snow friendly"?

I had to do that with some recent comments in another thread.

The Wiki Help link (at the bottom of every page) shows most mark-up tags. However, it doesn't show (spoiler)The spoiler tag(/spoiler) nor the (wassa)The Wassa tag(/wassa). (You'll need to use square brackets instead of parentheses.)

I guess that Wassa doesn't want them abused.

But you may be using the HTML-style mark-ups.

I'm a little late coming into this discussion, but I did want to let everyone know that we will be asking for a small donation of $3 for the Power Plant Challenge pathtags. That way, we will be able to reorder more in the future if the challenge continues!

I am so impressed with the planting that is going on!

Now you want us to pay for the pathtags? Nevermind, I'll just go back out an pull the 118 I've planted so far.

~ Of course, there are prizes ~
Participants who plant at least ten traditional permanent plants between Nov. 1 and April 30 will receive a Power Planter Patch.
Participants who plant at least 50 traditional permanent plants between Nov. 1 and April 30 will receive a Power Planter Path tag.

It really takes the fun out of prizes when you are expected to pay for them. And why would you want to reorder? This was supposed to be a limited time challenge to receive one...

I have 109 permanent traditional boxes planted since November 1.

I don’t know if I want to pay for a path tag, either, to be honest. It’s exciting when it’s a prize, but I’ve won the opportunity to buy stuff many times. (In fact, I have several emails asking me to buy stuff in my gmail inbox as we speak!) Do we also have to pay for the patches?

I just saw this. Aw, do not continue the challenge. (My vote.) If you want to keep it going, maybe make a new challenge with a different name -- maybe even different goals. That was it will not cheapen the success of earning the prizes for those who worked so hard planting for this challenge. 😊

I thought that the prize was that the letterboxing community as a whole benefits from all the additional plants we now have to find! The patch and/or path tag are a fun marker of the event. Buying them in quantity is expensive - glad to contribute.

I'm at 54 permanent traditional boxes planted since 11/1. Thanks to Super Hedge Hoggie and crew for inspiring us all to get out there and plant.

Thank you, Paper Trail, for saying what I was thinking. This challenge has encouraged me to clear my desk of 88 stamps and logbooks that have been sitting around for years. Now the fun begins as I get to begin carving guilt free again.

I, too, am happy to pay that very small fee.

I am happy to have more stamps to seek. There are not a lot of people in my area, yet I can occasionally travel with my husband when he goes out of town to work where there are more boxes planted.

I wonder if we will be told how many boxes total were planted for the challenge. That might be an interesting number!

Whoa! Maybe you could call the Power Plant Challenge the Spring Cleaning Planting Challenge. 😉

I imagine that it is a good feeling to get them all out into the wild and out of your home.
