Aren't they cool? I had never heard of love tokens before and found them fascinating! They kind of remind me of pathtags!

You know, the more I look at the different carved images on these love tokens, the more I think this would make a great LTC tracker!!! Anyone interested in hosting one? I'm already hosting a couple of swaps and don't want to host any more until the spring.

I have one that was passed down from my great grandmother to my grandmother and then me. It is a one dollar gold coin and was engraved with the dates of birth of the first two Amanda's 1871 and 1891. I have it now on a charm bracelet.

That's really neat (and interesting about the multiple Amandas). I'd love to see a picture!

Wow! What an awesome find and so very interesting. So they sanded the back of a coin smooth and that was their canvas, but what kind of tool did they use to do such a fine detail?

What will you do with the letter? Keep it? Give to a civil war museum?

I wondered the same thing and found this:

Despite differences in technique, the tools used to execute the engravings are relatively the same. The process is most often done by hand, using tools called gravers that come in a variety of shapes and sizes for different purposes. The length, width or depth of each engraving depends on the particular graver used and the amount of pressure applied.

What will you do with the letter? Keep it? Give to a civil war museum?

I'm pretty sure that no Civil War museum would want it... :^)

Think you need to "read between the lines" of this letter, there is more there than initially meets the eye!! LOL
