Dear LB'ers:
I'm posting this message for our daughter. She has a search adventure perfect for the letter boxing community.

Are you looking for a new search adventure?
My name is Vicky, and I live in the Phoenix area and am involved in high altitude weather projects. We recently had one of our balloons land about 6 miles south of Ramah, NM. If you are willing to venture out and find it (we have the exact coordinates) we can send you a prepaid FEDEX label for you to send it back to us, and we will send you a small reward for your time and effort. Please contact me at lostweatherballoon@gmail.com if you are interested, or if you know someone else who might be. I can send you the coordinates if you are interested. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Welcome to Pennsylvania in advance!

My daughter has a 35' camper and they camp at Artillery Ridge Campground.

There are a LOT of boxes in Gettysburg including many on the battlefield itself. They are very hard to get discretely because the battlefield is ALWAYS busy but if you are willing to take your time, you can get a nice selection. My favorite boxes not on the battlefield are Sunrise Soap Company and Postage Paid. Both of these are in unique stores and although discretion is needed, sneakiness is not. The staff is aware that both are there.

There is so much to do in Gettysburg that boxing may take a back seat!

You know...I looked into weather balloon flying and tracking and retrieving a few years back. They fly with a GPS unit and some sort of transmitter (ham radio, cell phone, etc) to report their position and altitude. They can reach 100,000 feet and drift downwind for miles depending on the winds aloft.

I would think geocachers would be a better fit to track down something with just a set of coordinates. Also, the last reported position might not be where the payload landed. It is probably the last location received as the package descended below the horizon of whatever was receiving the data.

Still, it sounds like a great challenge and I wish I was closer so that I could participate in the hunt.

Good luck!

Yes, the geocaching group may be interested, but we are LBers and have found 2 such balloons for our daughter and had a great time. They do satellite tracking so the gps location is within feet of where the balloon actually came down. One was near Corona, New Mexico and the other near Eminence, MO. Great fun!

Thank you. I'll look into the campground.

There is so much to do in Gettysburg that boxing may take a back seat!

That's what I'm thinking, but I may need a battle break. ;)
We have a lot more stops on our list after this one!

Not sure where I’ll be in April this year, but I’m sure I’ll be able to find a good brew or two...and plant a box of course. 🍻

I don't know about places to camp today, but in '92 I stayed in fields nearby when they filmed parts of the movie "Gettysburg" on location (it's a story for another time..) Unfortunately I hadn't discovered 'boxing back then.

I can recommend taking the self-guided tour, you can do it at your own pace. You can tarry where and as you will, or move along more quickly as the sights (dis)interest you. You might even be able to grab a 'box or a few with planning.

Belated Greetings ....

I'm working on a set of LTC's using Gesso and Gelatos. I used Versafine ink to stamp my image onto the card but them ink won't dry. They've been sitting for 3 hours and they are still wet. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I recently used gelatos on a card, and it behaves like watercolor in that it needs to "soak in" to the paper. If the paper is coated with gesso, the gelatos will remain on the surface and smear or smudge easily, along with anything you stamp on top of it. If possible, consider not using gesso underneath, add water when applying gelatos, and after they dry, stamp with Stazon (solvent ink). That process worked for me in a recent tracker. Good luck.

I'm intrigued that there are specific colors to use on your stamp. Luckily I'm in the ring and will get to see what you came up with. πŸ–

They were the re-usable kind and I did have the AQ number on the back. Which is why it was confusing as to why they were not acknowledged nor recorded.

So we started planting days here in central texas! We all plan a day, prep the stamps, spend the morning planting. We had lunch together and then went out to find.

Our next one, we voted for a double day. We'll spend all the first day planting and have dinner together. second day is for finding...

Maybe you could get some locals together to follow a similar format...

Clue Tracker for Android is currently being ported from the Apple version. Testing is in process and the app looks and works similar to the Apple version. Way better than Box Radar! Be patient, it is coming!

By the way, I saw your request for stamps for a homeschooling event...

I'm doing a stamp carving workshop and intro to letterboxing for our local homeschool community on March 13th! I'll be leading the carving and a friend of mine is going to lead the groups in finding letterboxes and educating...

I had the same problem recently -- I used a hair dryer on each card for a few minutes and then let them sit overnight. The versafine was dry in the morning (I tried rubbing the stamped images and they didn't smear).

[Edit: I live in a very dry climate - if the humidity is high, it might take longer to dry]

Stone Mountain can be totally overwhelming,

I've been doing maintenance on some of mine there and pulling some that have served their purpose and should be retired. I might just go ahead and pull all mine that are older than 2 years (um, yeah that's most - LOL). I would hazard to guess that the locals have most of the old ones and new boxers aren't going to bother with how overwhelming the park is anyway.

What they said! Also, you can also use gesso OVER your stamped image; it depends on what effect you're looking for, and how you want to use your color mediums...there is no right or wrong; just options for how to play!πŸ˜€

From a Phoenix launchsite?!? Wow! The jet stream must have been cooking that day!

I would love to hear more about your future launches and if any of them head towards central Texas I would love to help track it down.

Oh, how nice of you to do that! Hopefully a few families will get the bug. πŸ˜ƒ

We potentially have two families coming over Sunday to learn about letterboxing, and one of them has already decided that they definitely want to play. πŸ‘
