How many?

So I'm working on an ltc, and after 7 attempts to come up with a card that works, I think I can go with the design.

It got me wondering, how many different card designs do you try before you settle on one?

Part of picking out the image, for me, is to visualize what the presentation might look like. If I canโ€™t get a sense of what to do with the image, I usually keep looking for other ideas. That said, the original vision usually morphs somewhat as I begin to create it - doesnโ€™t look quite like I thought, or layout or colors need to be adjusted. In the end, itโ€™s usually very similar to the plan I started with, but tweaked as I went.

Are links safe?

Ryan, I have a question. When people post links on AQ, I've been freely clicking on them (like when I got Rick Rolled -- again! -- today. 8~P) And then my DH asked how I know the links are safe to click on. Does AQ have a way of somehow 'vetting' these links? Is that even possible? Could they carry something that might infect my computer with something nefarious? How do we know if they are safe since they come from so many sources? Or do we not know that at all? TIA.

Ordeal By Innocence

While searching for Sarah Water's The Little Stranger, I came across Ordeal by Innocence on Amazon Prime. Seeing that this was based on an Agatha Christie's book, I decided to check this out instead.

The premise is as followed: Heiress Rachel Argyll, unable to have children, adopts 5 children and raises them, along with her husband Leo, played well by Bill Nighy. And with 5 children, a few of them are a bit out of sorts, like the son Jack. Jack, played extremely well by Anthony Doyle, is emotionally sporadic, wild, cruel, a snitch and your basic out of control person, who is aware of his inability to stop or control himself. But he is just one of the "hot" messes in this family, as with most families, there are plenty of secrets running well, secretly, amok.

And between not having an substantiated alibi, and being the wild child with a record, when Rachel is murdered, he is the one charged with the murder. While in prison, Jack is brutally assaulted and dies from his injuries. The family, though sad, carries on.

18 months pass, and a few days before Leo's wedding to his secretary, Dr. Arthur Calargy, played very well by Luke Treadaway, arrives, stating that he was with Jack the night of the murder and that he is Jack's alibi. Unlike the book, this Dr. Calagry has a few secrets of his own. Naturally, his arrival throws the household into a tizzy, all re-living the night of their mother's death. Because they all know if Jack didn't kill Mother, then someone among them did.

Having said more than enough, on to my Kitty Paw Ratings:
One Kitty Paw for Anthony Doyle's performance. Hell, he pissed me off enough, I wanted him dead.
One Kitty Paw for Bill Nighy. He played Leo very well and, having not read the book, I wonder if they wrote his character with him in mind to play it.
One Kitty Paw for Luke Treadaway's performance as the hapless dr.
One Half Kitty Paw for keeping the suspense going, even though I narrowed it down to the killer and another person.
One Half Kitty Paw for the clever use of the staircase set.

But . . .

I have to take away a few Paws.

I have to take away a Paw because they were trying to make Rachel Argyll seem like horrible, overbearing, controlling mother and they really failed. Sure, she was mean at times, but they also showed her being very caring and a good mother. And since Anna Chancellor, the actress who portrayed Rachel has the talent to be cruel and unbending, as she was in Pride and Prejudice as Miss Bingely, they just didn't sell it.

And I have to take away a Half a Kitty Paw for her death scene. It was not done well and it was awkward. Not spoiling the "who", but she was assaulted from behind while standing, falls to the ground, knocking a shoe off, and taking a decanter with her. Then the maid finds her sitting in a chair and when the enters the room, she asks the maid "Well?" like she's perfectly fine and then suddenly there is blood. It was not done well. Too confusing.

So, at 2.5 Kitty Paws, I did enjoy it but there were definitely a few flaws.

As the person who posted the link in question, I will say on my on behalf, that is only time in my life I've posted a joke link. But given the meta nature of the thread/response I think the funny was worth the stretch... I mean Rick Aston is pretty benign.

That being said, as a practical matter in the case of the many message boards I frequent It's up to the members to behave themselves. Posting a link to porn or viruses will get your URL banned. On some VB bulletin sites you can hoover your cursor over the link and it will preview.

On my desk computer that won't work here but on my phone touching and holding the link will preview it.

Hope that helps... and sorry! ;~)

I usually ponder on the main idea I want for the card for a couple of weeks. Once I decide what the main idea/approach I'm going to do, I then decide what image I want to carve. I then think of how best to present the image on the LTC. Once I get it carved, I try about 3 or 4 different ideas for placement and background and then I just go with it. Of course, as I start getting them finished I think of other ideas.

They seem to do very well, though. I've found a couple, and despite the simplicity of the design (top just folded over, no seal per se) they seem to stay dry inside. As opposed to the duct-taped Ziploc baggie idea, which never seems to seal closed properly, is usually infested with bugs, etc.

Thanks for all the kind words. Another thank you goes out to the planters of the 5000 boxes. Each box is unique and is like unwrapping a surprise package. For box number 5000, I did try to find an unusual box, and I did find it in box #300070.

I appreciate all the kind words. One of you asked my age, and the answer is 85. Yes, I have slowed down since I started letterboxing almost 9 years ago. Now I seek out the easy trails and don't box if it is too hot or too cold. 5000 finds was on my bucket list. Now that I have reached that number, my next goal is to log in 1000 personal travelers. I have met many wonderful people along my letterboxing journey, and I hope to meet many more.

I start with a basic design in my head which usually morphs as I make the cards. I have a couple odd ball cards with a small degree of variation for my themes. Recently, I produced a set of cards and was disappointed when I looked back at my original sketch for the carve. I had reversed the negative space in my carving and I much preferred the original sketch. face/palm..

Does AQ have a way of somehow 'vetting' these links?

Not really. If there's a problem post, people can report it and moderators can delete it, so I'd like to think that problematic links won't last very long.

But there are steps you can take. If you're on a desktop computer and hover over the link, check where it links to. If it links to youtube.com, it's probably not going to have any porn or viruses on it.

Another thing to consider is who is posting. If it's someone with a long history on AQ in good standing, they probably aren't posting links to dangerous or inappropriate sites. If it's someone who signed up a day or two earlier.... they're pretty unvetted and it would be prudent to be a little more careful about clicking their links.

Browsers will often tell you if you try to go to a webpage known to be problematic so you have that protection as well. Either because the browser itself flags the website as suspicious or because you installed McAfee or Avast or something that will block access temporarily asking if you're sure you want to go there before taking you to the page.

But that said, for the most part, it's kind of hard for a website to do real damage just by clicking to it. I'm not saying that it's impossible, but it's not easy. They typically have to trick you into installing software, or trick you into entering private information, etc.

So for the most part, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Even if you do accidentally click to a bad website, chances are nothing permanently bad will happen without additional steps. But say no if it asks you to download or install something, or fill out a form (especially if they ask for personal information), etc.

A LOT of trial and error. :)

Amen to that!!! We usually spend a few days thinking of of a design. We discuss different possibilities for each design consideration before finally settling on one.

After carving, we print a few to experiment with regarding color, background and composition. Itโ€™s during this time that we usually stumble across an idea we hadnโ€™t thought of yet. At this point we frequently toss out our earlier ideas and go in a new direction.

Then we design the back to compliment the front design and many times carve another small stamp to go with the overall concept.

Not often, but it has happened after getting into it I get frustrated or dissatisfied and scrap the carve and start completely over and carve a new stamp.

what am I doing wrong?
I can't make a Tiny URL

I've never used Tiny URL so I can't help you there, but the first thing you can do to make the link shorter is cut off everything after the question mark and that will shorten it to https://www.atlasobscura.com/foods/polish-donuts

Which is a perfectly usable URL. This trick doesn't necessarily work with all URLs, but looking at all of the the text after the question mark, it includes terms like "source", "email campaign", "medium=email", etc., so it was pretty obvious to me that none of that is really essential. It's just used to track you and let them know where you got the URL, but none of it is needed for the actual page.

AQ doesn't accept the symbol ")" as part of the URL, mostly because it's not uncommon for people to write something like "I love Atlas Quest (https://www.atlasquest.com/)," and in that situation, a parenthesis is NOT part of the URL. It really shouldn't be used in URLs either, so AQ won't accept it as a URL and everything that comes after it will get cut off. Which, in this case, didn't matter because nothing that came after it was important for the URL to work.

PS. I was in Poland last year for "Donut day." It was delicious. =)

I heavily consider the carve, which is the hardest part of creating a card for me. Once I have carved my image, I think I average two or three different card designs before I settle into the one that "works". I'll have to say that occasionally I create a card that is a pretty good match to my original vision, but more often than not my card morphs several times before it is finished. I just fiinished a set that I made 4 different backgrounds for, and ended up circling back to the original! I don't consider that experience a waste of time or resources though it was yet another learning experience
As a side note to this question, it was mentioned that sometimes it could take a few weeks to come up with an idea or concept for the card layout. I have to say that when people post trackers that have 1 month or less for a due date, it's too much pressure for me. I need to have time to pace my work and move from step to step in a relaxed way that works with my creative ability. I have noticed that when I do something in a hurry, it's not my best work and I also tend to make more prototypes than when I am a given the chance to think it out thoroughly.

Hope I'm remembering this correctly:

Louis Armstrong once recorded a song in the studio. Then he and his band re-recorded it again and again and again trying to get it just right. After 100 recordings, they decided the first one was the best and used it on the album.

That is my perspective also. I work slowly, and enjoy the process as I work. Itโ€™s relaxing for me. The day I find it stressful, rushed, and no longer enjoyable, is the day Iโ€™ll hang up my gouge and markers and be done.
