Winter or Winter Holiday Stamps?
Board: Stamp Swap
Oct 26, 2018 9:42am
Thread Board
Merry “2 months until Christmas (less one day)”!

I am hosting my second letterboxing event / holiday ornament exchange in mid-December, and am looking for donations or loans of holiday (Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, solstice, Yule, three king’s day, winter, etc) stamps and series. I think the holiday letterboxing season is more special when it comes from a variety of carvers :)

I’m also happy to exchange or loan you some series that I have used in the past, but do not intend to now :)

Anyone who wants their stamps returned to them should receive them around New Years... honestly, it’s the only time of the year I know I can get to the post office!

Thank you!

I used to live in Spokane...love the whole place! I visited there a few years ago and left a hitch hiker....hope he is still around! I hope you do plant a new one or two for my next visit!

I've found a lot of those boxes and hiked the preserve. I've never seen an owner there. That area is controlled by the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center. I had thought they were a non-profit.
Location of a plant

I like to make my clues a tiny bit cryptic. I never give addresses and such. So I want a box location to indicate simply the city name (or state name, etc.,.). I have tried to use the city names given by AQ but when a seeker uses the 'Map Boxes', it shows some weird random address. When I try to use custom location, I can not leave coordinates blank - as soon as I save, random address shows up.

This post sounds frustrated. Sorry. Simply put, how can I lock location to just Indianapolis and not have AQ attempt to map it?

There are usually more no-shows than last minute additions.
There is always way more food than people can possibly consume.
Some people prefer visiting with friends than finding boxes.
Some people will find every planted box, event box, exchange, PT, etc.
Sit back an enjoy--nobody's judging--and if they are, shame on them.

AQ won't count a box as a find if you're listed as a planter (it ends up being counted as a "maintenance" visit).

I'm so glad you posted this.....I got blasted by a boxer who was angry I'd "listed myself as a finder" on one of my boxes.

I’m sure someone who knows better than I will be along but I’m betting that random address is just the middle of the city it’s listed in. If the goal is to be cryptic isnt a random location just as good?

What I would have thought too. But the random address is actually a long way from city center. And unfortunately, seekers keep going there. When I tried to use the actual city center, seekers go there. Maybe I should use the mystery box category but that would be so embarrassing. My silly little one-Google-clickers amongst the puzzle masters! Thank you for your input.

The mystery box icon is now automatically assigned if the location of a plant is larger than a city. So, if you want the mystery icon then set the location to the county.

I recently planted 2 boxes and was just going to put the cemetery or park name and city but I couldn't get AQ to accept it. I had to put a street address that matched the one in the system to get the clue to save. It was putting GPS coordinates on that weren't right, and I've seen people complain when it's wrong on clues and their GPS takes them to the wrong place. I even manually typed in the correct coordinates, but it kept changing them back.

I'm not sure why AQ would add an address if you just specify a city. It's not supposed to do that and I've never seen that happen.

All locations have a coordinate, though. Whether it's a mystery box or a precisely pin-pointed letterbox, they all have a location. Even a "world-wide mystery" box has a coordinate (0,0). The only difference is that the radius of mystery boxes is very much larger than for precisely identified locations.

So if you try to create a custom location for a mystery box, put the location in the middle of whatever the mystery covers. The middle of a city if it's in the city, the middle of the county if it's somewhere in the county, the middle of the state if it's in a state, middle of the Central Coast if it's on the Central Coast, etc. Then make the radius large enough to cover the entire area that the mystery covers.

If you have trouble listing a box, send a note to the moderators. They can add and edit locations as needed. If there's a bug, send it directly to me. I'm the only one who can fix bugs. Well, actually, Wassa can, but it's my job, so I'll do it. =)

She said she was a member of the private group that owned the preserve, that she had seen letterboxes/"trash" in the preserve,

I wouldn't worry too much about that. Anyone can "be a member" if they send in their $20 or whatever, and all the sudden they think they're entitled to speak on behalf of the organization. There are even problems with certain board members of these types of nonprofit groups getting carried away, taking actions and speaking to the press, saying things that are actually counter to the organization's wishes.

For example, our local land trust has a spruce tree that people in the neighborhood have been decorating at Christmas time. One of the Land Trust board members who lives nearby took it upon herself to set out a sign telling people the Land Trust didn't want anyone to decorate the tree. That lead to lots of upset people who have a family tradition of decorating the tree calling up the Land Trust president, and he didn't know anything about it. He had the signs removed and let people decorate the tree.

Y'all know I use largemouth screw-top containers with gaskets cut from shower pan liner under the caps. I've used a lot of Planters nut jars. Mayo jars have come and gone, with Kraft making excellent jars and then discontinuing them.

The other day I discovered the 30 oz. Heinz mayo jar:

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjry-DfnKfeAhVKjlkKHawXDAgQjRx6BAgBEAU&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.walmart.com%2Fip%2FHeinz-Real-Mayonnaise-30-fl-oz-Jar%2F230564075&psig=AOvVaw2NTPy5g0STDZbKbxZcuFzy&ust=1540750401296623

This thing is shaped like a football with the ends cut off. An excellent mayo jar; there's no place for a gob of mayo to hide from your spoon. I also expect it to make an excellent letterbox container, as soon as I've finished the mayo in it.

That is a LOT of mayonnaise to eat.

I prefer peanut butter. What about these jars that you don't even have to empty?

I also found someone at work who uses protein powder and other such products. These make solid bottles, and covering them (or the peanut butter jars) with camouflage duct tape will make it last longer.

Also, don't be afraid to search for geocaching containers. You don't have to do it to borrow some ideas.

So here goes - real life example:

Box #293369

At plant location, entered Indianapolis, IN

AQ offered 3 stored locations (side note - Choices 1 and 2 indicate # Indianapolis is in Hamilton county. It is not.)

Clicked on #3

Published box

Seekers complained. When clue page "View Map" used, Google Maps shows address American Legion Mall, 700 N Pennsylvania St, Indianapolis, IN 46204

I suspect G-Maps assigns an address to coordinates and is at fault.

After the complaints, I went back, clicked on #3, clicked on Edit Custom Location, and tried to just remove coordinates, tried to 0 radius, tried to enter 'city center'. Nada. So maybe what I'm wanting is an option to not offer "View Map" on the clue page.

Then again, I can always write "Do not use GMaps address" in the clue...

Groundspeak and it’s minions have been preaching that for years. Back when I was geocaching I put out over 800 caches by myself. ECP has even more. Of that number a fair amount were recycled food containers, mostly peanut butter containers. I never had any more chewed on than I did new lock and locks. Less in fact. Cleaned well they are just as safe as anything else.

It would seem that the seekers who complained didn't quite understand what the AQ clue listing was trying to tell them or they didn't take time to read your clue to know they'd need to do a little work to find the actual location. I'm not sure there's a way to get people to pay attention, but I'm not sure it's your fault if they weren't looking more carefully at the information that is there or if they are still learning how the listings work.

The location for this particular box is clearly the city of Indianapolis without a street address. So it's logical that when I click "view map" it's not going to magically map to the correct spot. If I read your clue, it's clear you want me to work a little to come up with the location on my own. It's unfortunate that when you "view map", it goes to Google and you loose the handy color coded map points that you get when you map boxes within AQ. They provide another clue that the map point is pointing to somewhere in the area and not a specific location.

Maybe they don't realize that someone would list a box within a city but would expect the seeker to read the clue and do some quick research, and since they didn't realize, they didn't understand what they were looking at.
