New Trail Automatically Assigned
Board: Walking4Fun
May 16, 2017 4:15am
Thread
I just finished the Portugal Camino last night and usually when this happens I am asked where I'm going to next. But I see this time I was automatically assigned to the PCT. I elected to go to the Tahoe Rim Trail which I had partially completed some time ago and that appears to be happening - probably tomorrow - really not sure.

Anyway, I'm still learning the Fitbit thing so I'm assuming the automatic assignment was due to using that device. It's just the beginning of the day now so I'm wondering if all my miles today will go to the PCT or to the TRT since only one trail can have miles recorded in a single day.

Walking 4 Fun will still ask you which trail you want to do next, but because Fitbit automatically syncs regularly, it reaches a point when more steps are coming in but you haven't yet logged in to select a trail and it's not sure what to do with them. So it'll pick a trail for you--at least until you log in and pick one yourself.

If there's only one day where you're on the "wrong" trail, you could just zero out the steps for that day, change the trail to the desired trail, then add the steps back by typing "fb" as the step count. It'll reload the steps from Fitbit and add them to the current trail--you're newly selected one.

I really need to set up a system where Fitbit users can select the next trail in advance so W4F will know what to do with your subsequent steps after you finish a trail. Not sure when I'll get around to that, though.

It's just the beginning of the day now so I'm wondering if all my miles today will go to the PCT or to the TRT since only one trail can have miles recorded in a single day.

If there are already steps recorded for the day, they'll go the trail that already has steps that day. If it's a day that has no steps yet, it'll go to your currently active trail. Like I said before, though, you can zero out the day's steps then when new steps are added, they'll go to your currently active trail.

Did this - it worked! Woohoo!

I need to bookmark your response so I can remember in the future what to do.

Much appreciated

Thanks Ladymouse,
I loved complaining when someone passed me and I still do during real marathons (well, half-marathons or less). Sometimes when someone passes me I'll just look at them and tell them "You can't do that" with a wide grin on my face. I get some interesting responses sometimes. But it wasn't complaining, it was just fun banter that helps the time go by and the pain to be forgotten.

I wish I could have found this level of energy 40 years ago. I might have actually hiked some of these same trails we're doing virtually.

Happy Trails and keep walking. See you somewhere on W4F in the future.

I got a Fitbit as a Christmas gift from my husband.
And I finally got set up on Walking4Fun!
I signed up for the Appalachian Trail. And I did 6 miles today.
That was a good day for me. So, ahh, this might take awhile.
I love that I have a virtual goal at least.

Remember, it's perfectly okay to change to another trail for a change of scenery once in a while! =) When you go back to the AT, it'll pick up from where you left off. Essentially, you'll virtually be "section hiking" the trail instead of thru-hiking it!

Hope you enjoy it!

I plan on through hiking. 😄
I wanted to hike it when I was a kid. But that seems unlikely now.
The photos are really nice so far.
I did walk a section. When I was a kid, my parents and I were on a road trip.
I can’t remember where. But I think we stopped at a park in NC. A part of the trail ran through it. I walked about 100 yards. I went back and I felt so tickled to tell my parents that I was on the AT!

My wife noticed on Facebook yesterday that the Sky Harbor Trail was opened again. Wanting for a long time to do this trail for a second time I jumped at the opportunity wondering if I had just been burned on an April Fools joke. But today I'm still on the trail so all is good ~ I think.

The trail will stay open for people to join for about a week, then it'll close to new hikers... But anyone already on it will be able to finish.

Fitbit Data No Longer Syncing
Board: Walking4Fun
May 17, 2019 6:01am

I'm sort of frustrated that my steps from Fitbit are no longer syncing to W4F. The last time they synced was on May 10th.

I've tried forcing it using "fb" in the steps field. And I've tried to again start from scratch by going to settings and beginning the Fitbit process all over. Nothing seems to be working.

I'm wondering if I need to delete programs and reopen them or if there is something else I can do to get my steps recorded on W4F other than manually recording them (which I can easily do but I did get spoiled).

Everything looks fine on W4F. Best I can figure.... you haven't actually synced your Fitbit for the past week. If Fitbit (the company, not the device) doesn't know about your steps, it can't tell W4F about them.

You can log into your Fitbit account and double-check that, but I'll bet that's the problem.

I'm not sure how you normally sync your Fitbit or what has changed for that not to happen automatically anymore, but once you get that working, it should all work fine again.

Once you do sync your Fitibit, it might take an hour or two for W4F to catch up with your week's worth of steps, but it'll catch up eventually!

I don't know what changed either but you were absolutely correct.

My device was keeping track of my steps, my app was not. Turns out I had to force that to sync with my device. All is good now.

It's good to have someone knowledgeable of all this electronic wizardry point me in the right direction when something goes awry.

Thanks!

Not a big deal, I just found it curious that when my miles went over, W4F put me on the John Muir Trail.
Was it next in line of some other trail choosing algorithm?

This has happened to me a couple of times too. I just change the trail to the one I desired. But the steps for that day are logged on to the trail that had miles logged on to it previously that day.

At least all our steps keep getting counted.

If steps get added to a trail I didn't want I go back and change the steps total to 0. I then select the trail I want and re-enter those steps on that day. That usually works for me. Also if I complete a trail and have a lot more steps than trail has I subtract the extras from that day and add it to the following day on the new trail. It might look like I walked a long way but at least the steps are going where I want them.

More or less. This only happens if you add steps when you've already completed a trail. W4F looks at it and thinks, "Well, she's already finished a trail but she's still adding steps. Where should they go? She hasn't told me! Arrgh! Hmm... I'll just put them on this other trail until I hear otherwise."
