Great job! They are really cute =o) Gumpaste is my next adventure... I have tried it once, but had issues with it drying out too fast.

Cheers!

Stamps and cakes

LOL now I can combine two addictions! Right now on CakeCentral there is an interesting discussion about using rubber stamps on cakes... I have heard that this was possible before now but, anyone here tried it before? I wonder if PZ is "food safe" =o) IT seems that the problem with most rubber stamps lies in the chemicals they use in the carving process, not a problem for us!

Cheers!

I have done this with a stamp Ryan sent me. I believe I might have a picture here on AQ but will check and post later.

in a previous discussion, webfoot stated that PZ was "absolutely non-toxic, and always has been", so I imagine if you are using a piece that has never touched ink, and use food-coloring for ink, you will be all right.

black fondant

Any ideas on how to make black fondant? I know with frosting you start with chocolate to make black... do you do the same thing with fondant? I need to cover an entire cake with black fondant, so not looking to make just a little here =o)

Cheers!

I never use chocolate to make black frosting...I use chocolate to make chocolate frosting. I use wilton's black food coloring...a lot of it...to make black frosting. I'd find some very black paste food coloring and knead it into the fondant. you might have to use the whole bottle. If you're making your fondant from scratch, get powdered food coloring, and mix it in with the powdered sugar before adding the wet ingredients in...

I took white fondant and dyed it black with gel color but it took FOREVER!!! So instead, I bought a 5 lb. tub of black (and 2 lb. of red too) Satin Ice on-line on a website called Intotheoven.com. We also have a store 1/2 hour away that carries it too. Black and red just took too long for me to color.

Yes I start with Chocolate and then add Americolor superblack. It gets a nice deep black without making everyone sick with all the food coloring in it.

I tried this once. Only once. I needed a LOT of black frosting--not just enough to outline stuff--and it tasted terrible! Since then I've always made chocolate frosting and dyed it black. You use a lot less food coloring and it tastes like chocolate.

I'd go with chocolate fondant and dye it black.

so I tried a new recipe for a cake today and all the comments I read about it was that it was good but they had a terrible time getting it to rise. So, I just adjusted the amounts of baking soda and baking powder just a touch... now I hope my oven will contain the mess! Yikes! Maybe that was not such a good idea =oP Live and learn =o)

Cheers!

PS while I was still mixing my DH and son left for the park and my DH made a crack about coming home and seeing cake oozing out the windows... maybe he is a bit psychic? LOL...

Competition!

So I am going to be entering my first real cake competition on May 1! I am scared to death as they require me to enter the professionals division because I teach at Michaels. I have never even attended a cake show, let alone entered one so I really have no idea what to expect. Anyone here ever entered a serious cake competition? Any tips, hints, tricks, things to avoid?

Cheers!

No themes, no categories other than separating people by experience and age.

I have my design more or less done... I like to stretch myself so it will include some techniques I haven't done much, and a lot of string work, but I love the design, so I hope it comes out remotely looking like the picture in my head =o)

ok, resurrecting an old thread here, but I learned something I thought I would pass on...

if you need red or black fondant, and you make your own MMF, you can add the color in BEFORE you add the powered sugar, and then getting the deep, true colors is a piece of cake ;o)

Cheers!

I will say that suitcases are FAR more time consuming that I first thought! Whew! I think I spent 30 hours on this one, far more than any other cake I have done to date.
