Available in many hues,
A pinch is all you need
For magic or for good luck
With this you will succeed

And if you'd like to learn to fly
Well, that's another use
You may have special talents
This stuff will help unloose

Off the beaten path in Roscommon
Is a memorial you may think is common
But these women and men
Fought flames time and again
Their bravery was certainly uncommon

This game began with paper and pencil, back in World War I
A simple game of guesses, it proved a lot of fun
In '67 Milton Bradley debuted the plastic set
Red pegs in tiny vessels marked the enemy's threat
And when the game was over, you might have heard a yip:
Oh my gosh, I can't believe it, you sunk my battleship!

Let's mix it up and do a little trivia today:

  • Onscreen Mickey and Minnie never wed, but in 1933 Walt Disney confided that "in private life, Mickey is married to Minnie."

  • Minnie first appeared alongside Mickey in a 1929 short called "Plane Crazy."

  • In a 1930 short cartoon, Minnie introduces her dog Rover to Mickey. Rover was renamed Pluto and became Mickey's pet in a short from 1931.

  • Minnie is short for Minerva.

  • Walt Disney voiced both Mickey and Minnie from 1929 to 1946 because he didn't like any of the other voice actors originally cast for the roles.

  • And my personal favorite, two actors who were longtime voices of the mice, Wayne Allwine and Russi Taylor, were married to each other from 1991 until Wayne's death in 2009.

B - Happy 90th Mickey: Vintage Mickey and His Sweetheart Minnie

I kept this to myself, but the words I called on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday this week were all singletons--they each appeared on just one person's card. And today's word? A big fat zero. Not a one of you picked it. You know what that means...it's a Wild Card Day! Drum roll please....

Wild Card - Grand Island East Channel Light (MI)

This gem is located on private property, but you can get a nice view of it in Munising, especially if you're out on a Pictured Rocks boat cruise. SITE Sleuths has a sweet carve of the lighthouse planted in Munising. I just checked, and it's been nearly 10 years since I found it, but it looks like it's still going strong. That makes me happy.

On a hot day in June, on the prairie in Greenville,
A circus event was staged
There were wandering actors and photo-op boards
To keep everyone engaged

Merry-go-round animals dotted the trails,
And circus performers too
There was popcorn and snow cones and more circus food,
Those sisters sure put on a do!

And when it was over a storm came along,
A trail flooded over that night
But the intrepid sisters returned the next day
And rescued most all stamps--all right!

GypsyLadybug and Cookie Cutter, among our greatest national treasures, to be sure. As people, before letterboxing is even added to the mix. And, no one blessed enough to attend any of their events goes away without a heart full.

Dawnkey, you are on fiyah with these creative reveals.

And this pair of pants is firmly in the middle of this year's Bingo field, which is pretty much where a pair of pants should hit, I reckon :)

Good morning bingo fans,

I hope everyone is doing well. It's a bit of an exciting day in Bingo-Land because at long last I've drawn the single most popular term this year. With a whopping 34 picks, exactly two out of three of you have this term on your card. And now, with apologies to Steve Martin:

Wi-Hi (Wi-Hi)
Now when she started boxing
She never thought she'd see
This modest pastime gain popularity
(Wi-Hi) How'd you do that hiking?
(Funky-Hi) I guess it's to your liking
Started in Wisconsin
Moved to Arizona (Wi-Hi)

(Wi-Hi) Now, if I'd known
Your boxes would be legend
I’d have hoofed it to Wisconsin
And found them without question (Wi-Hi)
Written up by Dawnkey (Funky-Hi)
This poem's a little wonky
Started in Wisconsin
Moved to Arizona (Wi-Hi)

N - Wisconsin Hiker

A shout-out to BaliWho, who to the best of my knowledge was the only person to guess that Wisconsin Hiker was the most popular term. And I quote: "I’m going to guess Wisconsin hiker because she’s awesome and has traveled all over this region and exchanged with everybody!" Yup, that pretty much sums it up.

If we're talking horseshoes,
One point is scored
If we're talking ground meat,
Less fat is stored

But out on the trail
It might be an allusion
To a tree at a tilt--
I'd draw that conclusion!

Hiya team Bingo - can I get a list of what Bingo games are still available?
Maybe this has already been covered and I missed it. But, now that I see I'm 1 away from a straight line I have a "need to know" feeling.
Thanks!

There once was a bikle named Michael
He was a bikle who loved to recycle
He pedaled trails in the woods
In search of promising goods
While boxers hid plastic from Michael

O - Bikle

In case you're wondering, according to the LbNA glossary, a bikle is a bicycler "muggle" encountered while letterboxing. There was no pronunciation guide, so I assumed bikle rhymes with cycle rather than with pickle. Either way, my rhyming options were limited, so I did the best I could.

Her very first plant was Sandy Crane
I've yet to find it, but I won't complain
Soon came Jerome the Nomadic Gnome
From season to season his home did roam

Then came the cemetery phase
The Creepy Crawl event sure did amaze
And more and more boxes displayed her art
All the ones 'Til Death Do Us Part

She took a boxing break for five long years
But then she came back, greeted by cheers,
Launching another Creepy Crawl
And 50th birthday events for us all

Her find counts stands at one thousand and two
That is quite the tally to do
And now the finale, this ditty is through
Let's give it up for BaliWho!

Today's word is an event. It's not an event I attended, but I could maybe struggle to come up with some rhymes about it. I decided not to, however, because I don't think any of you attended it either--none of you have it on your cards. Yup, it's a zero term, the fourth one I've called out of five zero terms total. Let's honor it with an anagram instead: BEHEAD BY YUCKINESS.

I - Disney! Buckeye Bash!

And that means we get a wild card today. Are you ready?

Wild Card - Split Rock Lighthouse (MN)

That happens to be another of my favorite lighthouses. I had a calendar showing it sitting atop its rocky cliff overlooking Lake Superior. When the calendar was done I saved the picture and thought how much fun it would be to see the lighthouse in person. And so in October of 2017, my husband and I drove up through the UP, across Wisconsin, north of Duluth, and toured the Split Rock Lighthouse. The funny thing is I thought we were going to a fairly remote location at an off-season time of the year, but there were actually tons of people all around. Turns out it was some Minnesota thing where all the schools are out for a couple of days and families all go on vacation, apparently to the North Shore.

Today's mini-lecture,
Please grab a pencil,
Is about a most common
Dining utensil

Often of metal,
With three or four tines
It may be quite plain
Or it may have designs

When it mates with a spoon,
You call this a spork
It's used to stab meat,
Like chicken or pork

Have you guessed it by now?
Then let's pop a cork
And have a fine meal
With a spoon, knife, and fork

Letterboxers tend to take sides
When discussing these containers
They're messy and they're full of bugs
Grumble the complainers

But they're cheap to make, say their fans,
And perfect for small spaces
Those are the basic pros and cons
I've stated both the cases

And as for me, I use them some
And I am sorry, man,
But they were good enough for one of the best,
The great Safari Man

After three months of this game, I'm thinking about suspending it. I'm getting burned out. The rhymes and the limericks just aren't coming. I can't even do word scrambles or come up with a haiku. I guess I could trudge along and just call the words and forget the rest of it....

Nick Lowe wrote it, Elvis Costello made it famous, and Dawnkey, inspired by Rocket Raider, butchered it:

As I drive through
This stormy land
After boxing at Homer Lake for all the day
I ask myself
Is all hope lost?
Is there any chance of finding a good food buffet?

And each time I feel like this inside
There's one thing I wanna know:
What's so funny 'bout peace, love, and yummy cheese balls? Ohhhh
What's so funny 'bout peace, love, and yummy cheese balls?

And as I drive on
Through thunderstorms
My dashboard warning light comes on, sometimes
So where are the towns?
And where are the burgers?
And where are the waffle cones?
Sweet waffle cones?

'Cause each time the storm sirens sound,
Just makes me wanna cry
What's so funny 'bout peace, love, and yummy cheese balls? Ohhhh
What's so funny 'bout peace, love, and yummy cheese balls?
