I carve way, way, way more than I plant. Because people like my carves, what I do is I go to Susquehanna Sojourn every year, which is a festival relatively near me and I post on the bulletin board there that I have free series for people to take. Last year I gave away over a hundred stamps. As long as I don't care about the stamps once they go out into the world then this works really well for me as a way to let people enjoy the stamps, but I don't have to plant them or pay for the boxes for planting.

The Memento and Tsukineko dew drops are my go to for the trail. Joann's sells plastic boxes that are designed to be photo holders that perfectly fit a bunch of them in neatly. I get my pink stuff from my local art store. They actually didn't carry it until a local letterboxer let them know that there was a market for the stuff. If you are trying to avoid Amazon then you can also ask a local place to special order. Otherwise, Amazon works fine.

Survey…Things you need while Letterboxing

Through the years, we've compiled a funny list of things we'd wished we had with us while letter boxing. (For Example~ a crowbar on a freezing cold, icy day
or a rake when we'd have to look under a huge pile of leaves, ETC.)
This has inspired me to do a series of letter boxes based on this list...
So can you help me with your ideas…
What are some things that would have been on your list?

Many Thanks, Weeping Willow 52

In the last month I've seen a bear and a bobcat on the trail. I've also encountered a skunk sleeping on top of a letterbox.

Anything "funny" you might take along for those unexpected creatures? Critter repellant? Bear spray?

besides a trowel and baby wipes, the best thing we've ever brought along were extra hiking boots in the trunk of the car! (after going face-first into a marsh... I needed them!)

Oh yes, great thought. I had a similar experience in Ontario recently. I was stuck in my soggy boots as we went to the event dinner, but at least 4EyesMcGee loaned me a dry pair of socks.

Yes to the crowbar (I ended up using a gutter spike and rebar because that was what I had in the car.)

We do keep a pair of rubber gloves in our bag for reaching into questionable holes and logs.

There was one winter when we wished we had cramp-ones.

A magnet & a long skinny stick (like a wooden dowel). Had a box in Illinois & almost wasn't able to retrieve due to an extremely strong magnet & tight hiding spot. No long stick so I used 2 skinny markers attached to each other (not ideal but I was in a pinch). They kept coming unattached. In the end we persevered !

So, you were hiking well? Is that why you were seeking rattlesnakes? That is certainly a way to go hiking sick, or worse.

We found a crowbar while boxing.
It came in handy.
A box was stashed in a place that collected water, someone had crammed a hitchhiker in the box, the lid wasn't properly replaced and the whole thing was wedged, frozen in a tree notch.

I actually do carry a folding step stool in my car for letterboxing. I have short arms!

Along with that, a "grabber" to reach those boxes that have fallen into the hollow tree trunk. Hot water, hand warmers and a chisel for those frozen as already mentioned

If you want just silly: Maybe nuts to lure protective squirrels out of their lairs, a mongoose for snake control

TMD and I sometimes joke we should have brought her Marine son along for some of those more challenging retrievals, so..a Marine!

Rain boots
very useful this year on the trail in Michigan.
And once on the trail in Wisconsin where the path to a box was
6" deep with water!
...rain boots may not seem funny but the big pink flowers on them are :)

I bring a large plastic trash bag to sit on when stamping in. Helps keep my backside dry when I end up sitting on a wet mossy log , or soggy ground. Plus, if I find any litter on the trail, I can stash it in the bag to dispose of later.

After finding a letterbox, a lovely copperhead slid and coiled up right where the box goes. I guess the box had made that spot warm. ;)

So a snake remover would have come in handy then. Either one of those long polls like a grabber, or a hunky snake remover by occupation. :D

Also a band saw, to saw away the part of the tree that has eaten the box.

Fireant poison would be a plus as well. Those pesky red bodied demons can ruin a trip really fast...
