I’ve been shopping on Etsy for years and it’s not like it used to be. It’s gotten much bigger with I think different owners than the original people. Many shop owners are unhappy and many have left. You see items that clearly have copyright issues and unless a shop gets reported Etsy allows it to continue selling. They allow sales of lots of stuff that should not be listed and a ton of stuff that is clearly not handmade or original.

Haven't been in Girl Scouts in maybe 10 years or more. I had been enrolled in GS for 34 years. I stopped volunteering as a trainer just after the new journeys program started... but I did help teach a mini event for the service unit we are in about letterboxing. Code of conduct was 1st. It went well and we short term planted boxes for them to find. One of the PIA mom's got mad at the Service Unit Manager (my kid) and told the council that we were teaching kids to sneak and hide things from the community. Oh and lie too. She ended up being a campfire leader...LOL

Seems to me that letterboxers other than Brownie Scouts might be interested. It looks like a good package for any letterboxer who's put off by carving, painting, etc., and just wants to try planting.

I went through the same thing before my last business trip to the UK, but I just couldn’t find much. I am in no way an expert, but it seemed like the letterboxing in England is very region specific, without much action outside those specific areas.

I did find this site:

https://web.archive.org/web/20121026230114/http://www.ian.kirkpatrick2.btinternet.co.uk/page1.htm

It’s a bit older, from the internet archive, dating back to 2012. But there might be other resources out there that I just never found.

Yeah, Dartmoor Bounders are no longer maintaining the Off Dartmoor list. He told me who he passed it on to but I think that person is also out of the game since he suggested I could pick it up if interested. I didn't feel I was the best person for that being on the wrong continent and all so never volunteered...

letterboxing in England outside of Dartmoor and the New Forest is very challenging even for folks with no mobility issues. Boxes planted by tourists go missing in London almost immediately.
Even in Dartmoor, you have the pub boxes, but they "don't count" as far as getting your Dartmoor 100 badge.

Over the past 6 years hubby has been to the UK 6 times and each time I gave him clues to 1 or 2 boxes close to where he would be visiting. Never found one.
Disclaimer, none of the boxes were on hikes, all of them close by or near to popular tourist sites, like Sterling Castle.
Actually make that 5 times, this year he refused to look, said it was a waste of his time, there were cameras everywhere and he was afraid of getting arrested!
Not to say there aren't available boxes, that was just his experience in the urban/tourist destinations he visited.

Thanks, I’ve heard that boxes in the urban areas got “lost” quickly😭. There are a few that have been around and just recently found. She can’t get to the moors with her Mom and she’s not sure of the agenda.(Mom doing tours with your company). Hopefully she’ll get one. Even one from a pub. They might enjoy that.

Dear Letterboxers,

I am posting to ask your help. My dear best friend, p green frog, has a birthday coming up. She was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and is spending more and more days indoors at her house. She and I taught together, vacation together, and letterbox together. Our husbands grew up in a very small town together near Homer Lake - hence, our events are called Homerdoodle because we love the Homer Lake Preserve. If you could send her a birthday card, an LTC, a post card, a note, etc. for her birthday on October 3, it might help to cheer her up.

That's a copy/paste error... it is a base64 encoded message (the == at the end is a giveaway), that looks like it was copy/pasted from the source code of an AQ message page (something about driving from CA to NC...)

I'd let the sender know that the message was gibberish, and ask them to resend it!

Confirmation of Attempt
Board: Letterbox Chatter

Thread
All box owners are dubious of reports that their boxes have gone missing. There's always the nagging suspicion that the attempter was in the wrong county. After a single attempt report, I will virtually never list a box as gone; I'll list it as unknown at most.

But this is 2019 and we're all carrying around smartphones. So if you've just attempted a box and are convinced it's gone missing, stand back and snap a pic -- or two or three -- showing where you are and where you looked. Offer to send that pic to the box owner. Remember you cannot send photos on AQmail, you'll have to get a "real" email address from the box owner. But if you took good snaps, he'll either confirm it's gone or tell you you were looking in the wrong place, please try again.

This should be written up as letterboxing SOP, I think.

I would love to see this adopted as SOP. I’ve actually been doing this for a while. To make them easily accessible, I post them in my public AQ photo album, then send AQ mail to the owner and/or mention it in my attempt report.

but it's easy to go the toolbox photo gallery and upload the photo onto an Atlasquest Album and refer the person to that. https://www.atlasquest.com/gallery/viewphoto.php?photoId=121795

A nice idea, but honestly? I doubt as the planter that I’d really be able to confirm or deny based on a photo. I remember where I’ve walked, not exactly how I’ve planted. I have to use my own clues to find my own boxes most of the time.

Generally I agree, especially since if the scenery has changed enough to make it harder to correctly follow a clue, it's going to equally hard to distinguish where you are from just a photo. There are still other cases (like with distinctive trees or man-made landmarks) where a photo would totally help a planter.

Uh...what if you are in the wrong spot and taking a picture of that wrong spot? Maybe you interpreted the clues incorrectly. Maybe you went the wrong way.

I don't think so.

And you can just upload photos to an AQ public photo album.

Sure, nothing applies to everyone, but you are in the 19% minority:

https://www.pewinternet.org/fact-sheet/mobile/

The point is, it’s a good suggestion. Sure, you may not be able to tell from a photo if it’s the right location or miles off, but it’s a lot more to go on than just a claim that “It’s not there.”

But when they're on an Atlasquest Album, anybody can see them. Right? On the off chance the box is still in place, this could be a spoiler. I'd prefer private email because it's just between the attempter and the owner.

Not a good enough photo! Obviously, some attempters will probably be better at documenting their attempts than others. But even a bad job of snapping pix of the crime scene is better than no pix of the crime scene.
