I got a ticket for putting out a temporary box at my campsite in a state park during an event. The ranger pulled up my listing on AQ, had my name and license plate from the campground, left the ticket on my windshield while out hiking... He also cited me for leaving my pre-teens watching a movie in my locked camper while I was out hiking...

I restrict all my boxes now!

Wow, it seems like that was quite an overzealous ranger. Why did it matter what you had at your own campsite?!

Maybe it was planted in a box of donuts in bear country? =)

How common is this?

It's not really very common. And I'd venture to say it's being nosy rather creepy.

If you restrict all your boxes, the Rangers win. Well, that one single Ranger wins.

I’m curious, were letterboxes not allowed at this state park?

Who knows? I did put that it was temporary.

State parks in TX require a permit to establish something like a geocache. It's quite a process. BootsTex has worked with the legislature to get letterboxes approved and yet no progress...

Well, the letterbox community wins. I wouldn't say the rangers win... The people it matters to can see my boxes, which after seeing your stats (sketchy-looking guy) that it won't matter at all.

So, Fantastic Mrs. Fox, can I ask what state this is in? The only reason I ask is for informational purposes only as we travel & I want to start hiding more boxes as we do. We also camp. This is surprising.

Whatever you do don't temporary or otherwise plant in Prince William Forest Park, Dumfries, VA. There was an event there and it was supposed to be a 2 day event and the ranger forced us to pull all the boxes on the morning of the first day. It was very sad as the event planner had worked very hard and many people had come and we were also very disappointed!!!

Just an alias that I thought might fit the logbook stalking theme. Is that 2018 in your profile? Congrats on one year of boxing!!!

I remember that. I think it was decided that maybe he was just a jerk on a power trip. Just our luck that he noticed.

I feel for you. I was arrested once at an event, under similar circumstances. Cuffs and everything. Good times, good times.

Yeah, but he let you go pretty quick. We were all a little disappointed never to see you in the back of the squad car. *nodding*

no state park in texas allows letterboxes without a permit. Which is a very very lengthy process...

I was responding to the post about the event in Virginia in 2016, the post from Ele. Forgot to include the quote from it.

This discussion reminds me of the story of how I chose my trail name. The year was 2001 ..... I was legit put in handcuffs, given a breathalyzer, and had my children escorted to a DCYF van when a looky loo in an RV thought I looked suspicious while we were seeking a Jay Drew mystery box in RI. Local and State Police. DEM. Back then we NEVER revealed what we were doing. I told them I was identifying trees. I was finally released.

I buy them on Amazon. Still a little pricey, but can find bulk sets that bring the price down a little compared to buying singles.

I just read some instructions for first time letterboxers. Not once did it mention CLEANING the stamp before rehiding. That's what I was taught - cleaning the stamp for the next finder. Is that not done anymore?

I'd only clean a stamp if I were using a different color for some reason. Is that what you're asking?

I think it's common courtesy to clean a stamp if you have a really juicy ink pad or use the wrong color.

However, people leaving ink on a stamp has saved me when I forgot my ink a few times.

No, I'm referring to cleaning it after stamping in, leaving it clean.

Honestly, I've been boxing for a while, and I've never heard of doing that, except under the two circumstances that LROSEM mentioned.

That's not a thing. I don't think it ever was. Why would you want the stamps cleaned?
