Saturday Distraction: Logo to Carve but no Place to Hide

This is mostly for discussion since we haven't had Friday Distractions for a while.

When I was driving home this evening I saw some company logos that look like they're worth carving. However, there is no place (that I could see) to hide a reasonable box. I could go with a naked stamp, but that just doesn't seem as fun. What would you do: find a place anyway, or just move on?

I miss those Friday Distractions. Could you carve the logos and plant them as a corporate series in a local park?

Might be fun to create a series of puzzles, where the clues were dependent on people figuring out the company associated with the logo. The boxes could be planted on a trail nearby.

Can't plant inside with permission? A nearby trail or park/preserve could work. Maybe a place with a name you can tie-in to the logo or name. Cemetery, name of a person in a made-up story?

Our local library has a rack of magazines and paperbacks that are free for the taking. Walking past the other day and there was perhaps 20 VHS tapes on there, mostly self-help garbage or other useless stuff. Out of all those tapes, exactly one of them came in one of those hard plastic snap-closed cases. Hey, I could take the whole tape for free, so I just took the tape out of the case and put it back on the shelf and kept the case!

These cases are perfect except for one thing: They have a pair of posts on the inside that insert into the wheels in the VHS tape. They're in the way, so I used the Dremel to hack them off and then a wood chisel to remove the last remnants of the posts so that surface is flat.

Now it's perfect. There's a clear sleeve around the outside for an insert, so all I need to do is print up an insert that looks like a book cover. The inside of the case will easily hold a log book and stamp. Closed up and put on a shelf, it looks exactly like a book until you pick it up and try to open it.

I've never hidden a box in a library before. I've found a few, though.

If they are all in the same town, then I'd carve and plant on some trail and call the series 'a tour through xxx' or 'come and visit xxx'

I made a fake dust jacket for a hollowed out book, titled The History of Letterboxing in Lewis County, complete with UPC code etc. Has not been found accidentally yet. VHS case is a great idea!!

There is a library near me where they have 3 boxes planted by one of the librarians. I was surprised to find that they were all in VHS boxes placed throughout the library.

We took a fake book got the librarians to add it to the card catalog. Our clues make you look it up to find its location.

I found a whole series in a library a few years back. All of the boxes were in unmarked video cases that were hidden on the shelf behind the row of books. The clues had you find a certain book or call #, and then reach behind it to retrieve the box. The series had been planted by one of the librarians.

In the main branch of the Salt Lake County Library there is a series of 7 naked stamps. They have magnets glued to the bottom and they are attached to the underside of the bottom shelf.

To find them you had to find each book from the vague description of it.

I found three. Two appear to be missing. One I couldn't find but I'm not certain I was looking in the correct location. And the final one I didn't figure out which book was referenced.

I planted a series in a library with that very method. It was a team effort.
We got permission from the library head. Then the reference librarian created a "book cover" using microsoft word for the template. I had the fun job of designing the "books" with titles and graphics.

That sounds like a reasonable idea. While it would be fun to plant the stamp/s by the company it will probably wind up not being practical. And maybe more prone to going missing.

Put them on a nice trail and make it a series.
