The other person can help out the forgetful person and also get to feel smugly superior that day. Win-win!

Is that why you guys box with me?

I've borrowed several library books on carving, but I've got to say this is the best one by far. It contains a lot of great info about the transfers, and basic gouge carving skills. Lots of sample projects to try to work on various types of carving, with many sensible tips along the way. It even covers very basic info about layered carves. Definitely a great entry-level book that covers many tips that I would share if I were trying to help someone who has never carved before. The only glaring exception was that it didn't cover heat transfer.

For what it's worth, here are some various carving tips that I had compiled a few years ago from multiple sources:

If you've got time to kill, may I suggest making a county box map?

It requires a lot more work, but I think the results are much cooler.

1. (And the longest step) make a list of all the boxes you've found and what county and state they were in.
example

2. Make an account on [mob-rule.com] It's free don't worry. (Not sure why hyperlink isn't working)

3. Decide what type of map you want to make. (I.e. a map based on whether you've been there or not, or a box based on numbers)

4. Profit

Posted it before, wish more people tried it.
Disclaimer: creating and maintaining a county map may create unrealistic goals of visiting EVERY county .

I don't know about that :)

There actually are people who do this as a goal. I'm sort of one of them. I have a little over 55% of the counties; I don't know if I'll get them all or not, not really a big deal to me.

I just track them, not set it as a goal in and of itself, like some others do, so there should be another purpose to be there, but I will plan a slightly less optimal route to see new ones. For me, its a forced way to see new stuff that I might not have otherwise known about.

I've been tracking this on a huge paper map since before the internet existed. Its quite tattered.

Oh I meant it more tongue in cheek. With the fact that we will probably be living in at least two or three more places before "settling down", I fully intend to give a good account of myself on the lower 48.

We can relate to the "taking the less optimal route".
The spider web connecting Iowa to the SW on my map is the result of us taking a different route home. Every. Time.

Boxer Lover 47, are you talking about the bolded names of the box in your found list in your logbook? Aren't those boxes that have been deleted by the owner? Or are they boxes that belonged to folks who have deleted their account?

No, I was asking about the boxes bolded in Squatchis' list of counties/states for his map.

But you are correct that the bolded boxes found in an AQ log book are ones not entered into AQ.

Now how do you save it and then show like the red where I have been

Here are 2 ways to do it with html markup (not sure how you do it with wiki):
(1) Go to http://www.world66.com/myworld66/visitedStates/. Select the states you wish. Select "Generate map." Then highlight the beginning code in the box from the first < to the first >. Then you can copy and paste it into your profile's Free-Flowing Thoughts.

or

(2) Go to your Free-Flowing Thoughts in your profile (or wherever you want to post the link) and copy the following piece of code
<img src="*://www.world66.com/myworld66/visitedStates/statemap?visited=

(but replace the * with http). Then type the alphabetized list of state abbreviations you want.
Then copy the end of the code
" alt="" /></

ANY TIME YOU WISH TO UPDATE THE MAP simply go to the link and add in the state abbreviation in the alphabetically correct position in the list. Note: states are listed in the alphabetical order of the full state name, not the abbreviation.

Hope this helps. :-)

I just added this to the Help Wiki since it is asked periodically.

If anyone would like to add the code for Wiki Markup that might be helpful.

If you want to you can go to my profile, right click on the map, then click on 'inspect' and you should see the code you need in the upper right hand box.....I found that easier than the instructions in the help section.

I just googled how to put up images on a web site then stored the image on my old blog and went from there.

Whatever you find easier......

Were you able to get the map to show? If you followed my steps exactly and it didn't work, you might have your preferences set to Wiki markup. I think my steps won't work for Wiki markup.

Much easier to do what Miss Moon said. Feel free to edit what I wrote. :-)

I am sure there is an easier way to explain it in the Help Wiki. I wish I had figured out how to simply write the link (<img...) without it performing the function. That would have been MUCH simpler.
