I was introduced to letterboxing by that Toronto Star article back in 2010. I thought it was amazing that this person was introduced to boxing just by discovering a letterbox... I thought that was, well, sorry to be cliche, but magical.

The box that Northern Lights found was one of my earlier ones and I can distinctly remember thinking that I don't care if folks find my boxes mistakenly if it means that they might also magically be introduced to this hidden world. Quite frankly, at that time, I was putting my geocache warnings in my boxes only because of this abstract theoretical threat of the box being found by a geocacher (not so abstract now that I've had stamps traded out of my boxes). But that Northern Lights has found letterboxing and is starting to participate because of one of *my* boxes, well, that's just a delightful Christmas present for me, isn't it?

Thanks for my Christmas present BC Northern Lights!

I think thank you is in order! Just think because of you I have been introduced to a world I knew nothing about a week ago! You have been very kind in helping me along. Both you and Water Lily (I also think it is neat you did a box together for the Royal Botanical Gardens) When I am home in the summer I am going to do all of the boxes there!

:) Hey but think it isn't just one person that you got interested it is two. Me and my ten year old daughter!

Although I'd definitely do a series with Water Lily, it was actually Fiddleheads' fantastic work you'll see if you go to RBG :)

Well, kinda. You can't see them now because it's all closed, and 2 of 3 of mine disappeared. But I have recarved both of them, and I will replant in the spring, maybe a little farther off the beaten path.

A Day at the Beach Mini Meet

Preparations are nearly completed for "A Day at the Beach" in beautiful Port Stanley, Ontario. The Little Blue Team (our grandsons) have been busy carving a series of stamps which they will be planting themselves (with supervision of course) and it sounds like the clues will be kind of tricky. The boys had a great time at the Box ON event at Rockwood last year and want to use some of the ciphers they learned there in their clues. Grandpa and I have also been busy. We hope you will enjoy the locale and some of the surprises we have in store for you.

I doubt if it will be warm enough to swim, but you just never know, I could be wrong. There are tons of amazing things to do in this picturesque little village . . . AND we will be planting letterboxes near many of these wonderful sites.

The clues to all our boxes will go "live" at midnight on June 16th. To pick up a copy of the clues and a goodie bag full of local information and maps, meet up with us at our surprise secret location between 8 - 10 am. Clues to find our secret location will be posted a week before the event to give you a chance to figure it out. Don't worry, it will be easy and fun. The event stamp will be at this secret location.

We WILL NOT be having a potluck lunch. Bring a picnic basket if you wish but we recommend Mackie's on the Beach for fabulous fast food and world-famous Orangeade (which is still a family secret to this day) and homemade fry sauce . The condiments at Mackie's are so delicious you could put them on cardboard and eat them . . . but the hamburgs and hot dogs are fabulous too!! The Big Blue Team will be there for lunch at 1 pm and hope to get a group photo at that time.

We will be doing personal exchanges a little bit differently this year. Each participant will be given a little pin to wear on their shirt. Watch for these pins as you wander through the village searching for letterboxes and swap stamped images as you meet.

If you are planning to stay for the weekend why not purchase tickets to the Port Stanley Festival Theatre. And don't forget all the boxes planted in London, St. Thomas and Elgin County. If you need help with accommodation suggestions please give us a shout.

Hope to see you at the beach,
Big Blue Team

Just a quick little question completely unrelated to letterboxing..... Is there a metric system equivalent to "calories" that you use? I know you use kilometers, and I think you use kilograms, but what about calories? Are calories still calories in Canada, or are they something else like joules or something? =)

Canadians measure Nutritional Energy in terms of a unit called the "B.E.". This stands for "Bacon Equivalent". 1 BE == 1 slice cured thick-cut bacon

Example:
"That there Big Mac is about 7 BEs, but if you add a couple slices of Bacon to it, it goes up to about 9 BEs."

Yes, calories are calories, and 1000 calories are a Calorie (with the capital C) or kilocalorie, just as in the US. But the BE unit is becoming more widespread...

Hah, hah, hah, hah!!! Yes, we still injest calories and many/most of us still measure our weight in pounds. (Although some things are measured in grams and kilograms..... like my cereal box is 550g of weight. (What is that??)

In the US, we're pretty lazy. You'll almost never hear people talk about a kilocalorie, but that's almost always what people are referring to. =)

Because, you know, are units of measurement are too easy for foreigners to figure out, we have to confuse them further by misusing the labels too. *nodding*

Hi folks . . . Pam and Hal of the Big Blue Team here. We've been quiet for a while as family chaos kept us from our favourite hobby for far too long. The last straw, as they say, was when Hal suffered a heart attack the end of November. He is working hard on his recovery with the amazing cardiac care team at St. Joseph's Hospital in London.

We had a couple of firsts today. Today is the first day Hal has driven more than a 1/2 hour from home. Today is the first day we have been letterboxing since Box ON last year. And today we found our 500th box!!!

Hope to run into you on the trail!
