Searching for grant money
Board: Yakking It Up

Thread
Hi,
My daughter wants to do a community service type of project. She is inspired by 'feel good' things, she did a "16 Random Acts of Kindness" when she turned 16. She did things like take cookies to the firehouse, toys to the childrens hospital, gave out kindness cards, flowers, etc.

She now wants to create a wall titled "Today will be a good day and here's the reason why" where people can write nice notes to themselves and others.

Is something like that grantworthy? Where and how exactly does one search for grant money?

She has made a list of things she needs to do, find the perfect spot for it, (in our little village somewhere), figure out what exactly to make it out of, what will withstand the cold winter months here, how to build it, research how much it will cost, find out who to talk to for permission to put it up in the village....We just have to figure out how to pay for it. I said if it was like $50 I am fine with paying for it. If its like $500 I am not. It will be somewhere in between.

I do like the idea of applying for money, I think it also validates the project. I am just not sure of where she should start searching....any ideas?

Thanks!

1st I just want to say that your daughter's projects make me so happy! I think spreading a little hope is wonderful! (and people so desperately need a little hope!). I got a case of the warm fuzzies just reading your post!

Grant worthy? I think so. Something like Go Fund Me (although that is sometimes "hit-or-miss" and if nothing comes of it, I don't want her to get disappointed/discouraged. On the same note, if she makes something like a Go Fund Me and you post that again here, sometimes AQ folks step in to help out-a member did that several years ago and offered LB Trading Cards if we let them know we donated to the cause-not necessary, but an idea).

Sometimes places like Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts or Kiwanis might help out and take it on as a project (they are often looking for community service).

I hope this helps! Please keep us posted :)

This is when I'd put a plug in for local government. If you're in a smaller town, find out who is on town council and send them an email outlining what you want to do. They should be able to tell you all about who to contact to get the right permits and what to expect cost wise, etc.

I agree with contacting the town council to get information about permits and requirements. When she knows precisely what she needs, I think contacting local non-profits and businesses to solicit donations of the materials (Home Depot has a foundation for charitable causes, as do others) as well as volunteer labor for the building part - Scouts, Boys & Girls Club, Rotary, Soroptimits, and any other civic-minded groups, many of whom look for ways to contibute to their local communities. I think that involving local people makes it more meaningful than soliciting funds from strangers through grants or social media.

In a previous time I was a contractor so I’ve done my share of dealing with municipalities. In my opinion there are things that need to be done before concerning yourself with funding. Have your daughter draft up a proposal. In it include the aim of the project, where it will be located (and if that land is legally available), the dimensions of the wall and state that she intends to fund it herself. This will need to be submitted to city (probably the building dept).

Others have mentioned various way to acquire the actual funding - all good suggestions. From my experience, given that this is a community project, permissions will be a bigger stumbling block than financing.

It sounds like a worthy goal. Kudos to your daughter and good luck to you both!

Middle school NJHS groups have mandatory community service hours. They could spend that fundraising &/or helping with the project itself.

In our area several of the banks have community grant programs. That might be another place to look. Maybe check the local paper. Often groups that give these types of small grants get coverage in the local paper - that might give you some other local sources to try.

Are you secretly Wassa?
No wait, I've met both of you.
But not at the same time.

Hmmm. You wear glasses, Wassa doesn't.

See? No glasses.

Wassa claims his real name is Mark.
"The mark" is the target of someone trying to pull a fast one as in duping a person. (Red herring?)

If your cards were large enough you could do exactly the same thing.

Did you notice the size of the ink pad though?

If we don't have our personal stamp don't we use our thumbprint? The sumos do the same thing, but on a larger scale.

So, does McDonald's actually have this, or was it done just for the advert? Has anyone gone to verify?

I just poked around and McDonalds is giving away the carrot bags for free. But I think this is only in Britian, as it a British commerical.
