It just bugs me that if I don't go all the way back by "Back button arrow" I'm again dumped into Expanded view.

We can improve your experience. You have very specific needs and desires about how you want things to work, so let's see if we can make things work better for you. =)

It sounds like you want a link that will show you all recent posts in the simple view? AQ doesn't provide such a link, but there's no reason you can't create one for yourself. Add a new link to your Boards menu (or browser or wherever you prefer) that points to https://www.atlasquest.com/boards/read.php?view=simple.

The read.php points you to the page of messages, and without anything indicating where to start viewing messages, it just shows the last page of them. The "view=simple" tells AQ to open the window in the "simple" view.

Just the act of clicking on the button will open the message boards to the last page of messages in the simple view.

It also sounds like you want to the links to the messages to open a thread, so I've added that option for both the simple and summary pages. It seems logical that anyone on the simple and summary pages who opens a thread would want the thread expanded, so I have the links automatically set to use the expanded view.

Now you can use your own custom link to open the simple view, then use the thread links to open individual threads in the expanded view and never actually have to click the simple/summary/expand buttons. =)

Unless I misunderstood something about how you use the message boards.

I cannot determine how to post to a Message Board if it is not one of the Boards in the drop down menu.

You probably have to change the group. There are hundreds of boards on AQ and the list is a bit unwieldy, but different member groups have different boards. By default, the "Everybody" group is selected and the boards in that are letterboxing related. If you change to the "Yakking It Up" group, you'll see "chatty" boards. If you change to the "United States Letterboxing" group, you'll find the state and regional boards for the United States.

I'm not sure what board you were looking for, but you won't see it as an option unless you select the correct group first.

On a somewhat-related note, I just found a bug where, when you're reading a board and click the "Start New Thread" button, it's supposed to open the posting page to automatically select the group/board of the board you were currently reading. (If you're reading messages from "all boards" or something, it'll default to the Everybody group and ask you to select a board.)

But when you're reading messages from a particular board, it's supposed to automatically set that board as the default when you post and it wasn't doing that. So if that was causing your problem, the issue should be fixed now.

If I'm reading correctly, to start a new Help Desk discussion, first you need to open a Help Desk thread to only that particular discussion thread, or only that board.
Then Start a New Thread will default to that board.

Previously, when opening a message from Simple to Expanded, you got only that one message and could start a new thread from there. Since opening one message defaults to all messages being expanded, the Langloiers don't know which board you want so you must fill in the blank.

Got it, I think.

My home town has three listing?

Any idea why Stone Mountain has 3 listing? If one was the park, one was the Village, and one was the general neighborhood it would kinda make sense, but each list has boxes from each category of area, so I'm just confussed.

I'm not sure which three entries you're referring to (I see a lot more than three entries referring to the park!), but there are going to be slight differences in the listings that might not be readily obvious.

For instance, some people might type the "name" of the location as "Stone Mountain Park" while others might put the "address" of the location as "Stone Mountain Park." AQ is pretty stupid and doesn't realize these are really both the same locations.

But in both cases, when you look at the listing, you'll just see "Stone Mountain Park, GA."

Sometimes people don't include a county with the location while an otherwise identical listing does have a county, but AQ doesn't usually show the name of the county in a listing so when it displays the location, the two locations might look identical.

But in a nutshell, there is going to be something different in the listings--even if they look the same on the surface.

The "Stone Mountian" listing is a typo someone added to the database, and AQ isn't smart enough to realize that "Stone Mtn" is the same as "Stone Mountain."

So, three entries.... At least there were. I merged them all into "Stone Mountain."

At least until the next person adds a "Stone Mountian" or "Stone Mtn" again.

The state themes (Preferences->theme options->browse themes) give a list of people who identify as being from that state. In the description, click on the "about page" for each state theme and then scroll down.

Message Boards - Simple Summary Expanded Views

The look of the message lists has changed and previously my default view was always Simple but now it seems that every time I go into my message boards the view isn't Simple and seems to randomly change to any of the settings. If I set the view to Simple, go into a message then back out of the message the view resets to Expanded. This change is quite annoying.

There's nothing random about it--you probably just don't understand how the links work.

If you want a link that always opens in the simple view, you need to use a link that explicitly states "view=simple" in the URL parameters. I've gone ahead and added such a link to the bottom of your 'Boards' menubar option.

For anyone else who wants such a link, bookmark the link for https://www.atlasquest.com/boards/read.php?view=simple. It will always open you to the last page of messages set the simple view. (Don't click this link then bookmark it--bookmark this actual link. If you click it first, AQ will add the startId to the URL and you'll forever be linking to the same page of posts.)

Message Board appearance

Thread
Hi Ryan,

When I am on the message board, I have a large field of white space on the right half of the screen. The message boxes only take up approximately 1/2 the computer screen (the left half). The top and bottom menus fill the screen appropriately and other pages seem to also be fine.

This in no way interferes with functioning, other than it is slightly disconcerting to look at.

Thanks

I've updated it so the posts are as wide as your entire page. =)

You might have to refresh your browser to get the changes, but they'll eventually be picked up regardless.

Happy trails!

My Logbook Finds - alphabetically

I can't see all of my finds any longer in alphabetical order. There's a 500-box limit. And then everything is by year. So if I'm looking for a box I found previously, and I know the name of it, but not what year I found it, I would need to click on each year and then look alphabetically. Why?? Also, is there a way to search our finds or plants? By name or location?

I agree. I also like to look up LTC finds by owner but now that's not possible unless they are in the first 500. And now I can't easily see my LTC count from my logbook, I'll have to manually add up the LTCs in each year.

So if I'm looking for a box I found previously, and I know the name of it, but not what year I found it,

I would do Letterboxes -> Simple Search (type in name of box) and it shows the last found date, and your find date.

I also looked at Letterboxes -> Advanced Search -> Participants and if you type in your name as "Finder", (search button is way at the bottom) it seems to pull up your entire finds list in alphabetical order

Yes, when I go to the My Profile page, and click on the various numbers for Finds, Plants, Attempts, etc, other options come up.

For example, I clicked on my Finds number, and a list of my 500 first plants came up.

I clicked on my Attempts number, and my Finds list shows up.

I didn't know those lists were there. At least I can see how many I have, but I'll miss being able to search for all the LTCs by owner. When I used the advanced search I got 3 different results for the same search. I've never really gotten the knack of the search options.

I noticed that for mine, it listed the name of the series, and not each individual box. But, at least I seem to get the entire alphabet to look at, unlike the "first 500" list (>.<)

You can do a "simple search" which is quicker.
