Logbook Tweak

So I tweaked the logbook again, and those of you who want to search for specific boxes but can't remember the names.... I added a search option to filter results based on the start of the box name.

But... there are compromises which you may or may not like. My goal is to keep the queries running fast, after all. You nudge something in one place, and it pokes out in other places.

To keep the queries running fast, AQ no longer pre-sorts the results before limiting them, so if you have 1000 finds (for instance) and sort them alphabetically, they don't stop at the M's (or whatever is halfway through your list). It more-or-less randomly displays any 500 boxes of the total number of matches like the regular search does. You'll have to narrow down your results if you're looking for a specific box.

I also renamed the "500 limit" to "all" years since that appeared to cause some confusion. There's still a limit, though. That hasn't changed.

And I added limits to all possible search results. It might be your logbook, but it acts more like a search now. Because, based on the feedback I got, people seem to prefer using it as another search option rather than an actual logbook. So I went ahead and changed the code to be more.... search-friendly.

So in a nutshell, it works more like a regular search. Which, for those of you who wanted your logbook to be searchable--will probably like. For those of you who prefer your logbook being a logbook.... you probably won't. And I'm sorry for that.

Yeah, that probably happened because you installed your monitor upside-down. If you turn it right-side-up, it should fix the problem. ;o)

I was very happy with things the way they were. Being fast is not always being best. Just my humble opinion.

Being fast is not always being best.

You say that now, but if AQ took 10 seconds to load every page, you'd probably find it very annoying. It wasn't that bad--but I'm not going to wait until it's so bad that people complain before doing something about it either.

I'm not trying to make queries that take 1/10th of a second run in 1/100th of a second that nobody would even notice. I'm fixing the queries that take several seconds to run. And in the worst case, these tended to range from about 10 to 13 seconds. That's not acceptable. Any query that takes more than about 1 second to run gets a hard look by me, but 10+ seconds? It had to go.

My problem is that there is still no way to see the entire list of finds in the logbook or search. I tried the advanced search but it only shows 2500, and I'm assuming those are random. I think that the biggest complaint was that we couldn't sort (not search) and see our whole list of finds anymore, but I might be wrong. We can sort by newest, oldest, owner ... but if you can't see the whole list, and you're getting random results, then what is the point of sorting? I'm really not trying to be difficult and do appreciate you trying to please all of us.

Example: In my logbook, LTCs, I set it to search all by newest first. The first LTCs it shows are from 2017, so I miss 2018 and 2019 completely.

It seems like there's a couple of things going on here. One is being able to search for a particular box one has found. Another is being able to see the complete list of one's finds.

Regarding the second thing, it used to be that your plants and finds were displayed in order, 100 per page, and you could get a complete list by going through the pages. Now they're displayed by year. If you have fewer than 500 finds in a year, you'll get the complete list for that year, but if you exceeded 500 finds you won't.

For my own logbook finds I've only got one year, where I exceeded 500, 2018 with 503. I was just looking at that, and it made me feel a little uncomfortable. All but 3 of my finds for the year were showing, but which 3 weren't? The first 3? The last 3? Some random 3? I wouldn't know how to search for them because I wouldn't know what I was missing (unless I checked my paper logbooks).

Would it be possible to add a month field next to the year field to help with the logbook display? Most people don't exceed 500 finds in a month, although I know some people do.

What is done on another geolocation game (that shall remain nameless) is that the list of all your finds (with logs) can be run once every three days. A request to generate this list can be queued. Once completed this query is ready to download. The results of the query are available for download for a week. If a query is queued again the results replace the previous results of the query.

Perhaps this is a compromise that can be done. Other numbers can be used here, probably lengthening the time between queries.

Actually, my original version did show all of the finds from that year. It wasn't ideal (some people have a few thousand finds in a single year) which is still a rather slow query (and possibly a very long-loading page), but at least there was an actual limit in the form of the end of the year.

Now that there's an additional way to narrow down searches, there's less need to depend solely on the year to filter results, so I added same 500 box limit that the "all years" option had to everything. The queries run faster.

Would it be possible to add a month field next to the year field to help with the logbook display?

I'm going to wait on this idea. At that point, I'd rather just let people put a "start date" and "end date" and include up to 500 boxes between the two because some people could invariably prefer to see an entire year, others might want to see a specific month or week or whatever. Maybe that's the better option.

That's actually very interesting. So apparently they've run into the same problem AQ has been having. That's a surprising "fix" to the problem, though. I wouldn't have thought of that idea in a million years.

A request to generate this list can be queued. Once completed this query is ready to download.

If you just want to download an entire list of your finds, I already did that. Check the bottom of your profile page. =) No queue necessary! No wait needed!

Generating a long list like that that doesn't require sorting and processing.... it runs pretty fast. All these features people want on their logbooks.... it slows things down a lot. So the download is very basic, bare-bones stuff--but it's a complete list of plants, finds and attempts. I'll probably add some other options in the future (carves, donations, owned, etc.) but those hadn't been as much of a priority for me.

Is there a way that you could have a setting to change the default view to the most current year rather than all? Or even better if you could add a setting that people could set the default view however they prefer?

Ah, didn’t know that existed! I don’t scroll past my “interview”.

AND, That’s the most comforting thing I’ve read concerning the on-line logbook. As long as I can access the complete list somewhere, I’m happy. For info on my individual finds, I will continue to use the search options available in the Letterboxes dropdown.

I have a lot of finds from LBNA that I logged as unlisted since they are not on AQ. I could scroll through my logbook alphabetically before to find them since I didn't know the year. I tried an advanced search but the Owner is not listed as a member of AQ. Without going through each year, how do I easily locate them now?
Thank you.

Teacup,

Couldn't you just do the same thing and select "all" for the year?

[Edit] Oh I see now that it is limited to 500. Is that the issue?

It doesn't download into any recognizable organization on my computer, just what appears to be an AQ #, a name and hashtags. It's all finds, no matter LTC, traditional ... No dates. I can't figure out how that would be useable.

Re-record each unlisted find and place LbNA as the first word in the new title. Then search that word (LbNA). There's your list! Then go through again and delete the old finds. Have fun! 🤡🤓🤔

Try this:
Go to an "all" and ""Owner" search which should show up to 500.

I miss doing that, it made me happy to see them all listed there and helped me procrastinate for a few more minutes. ;)

I think getting a inbox message saying, hey some one replied to your message, is a good idea.

Perhaps a widget is in order? One that lists My recent messages, and replies to me messages, just like what use to be on the Board page.

Back to my coffee now.

There's a way! Did I miss this before or was it added? There's a box for "starts with" at the top. So to search for a box you found that starts with the letter "M" but you don't know what year you found it, put the letter "M" in that box and set the other search parameters to "All" and "Alphabetical". That's good. That's actually better than it was before. I pulled up 309 boxes that start with the letter 'M'. Was that "starts with" box always there and I just didn't see it? Thank you Ryan!

Strange. I see type of box and dates on my iPad. I haven’t gone on my computer yet to experiment.

I do know that if you have columns that are too narrow, sometimes the info in the columns will show as hash tags. Try increasing your spreadsheet column widths. If all that works out, you then should be able to sort by type of box, etc.

There are widgets that do both of those things already, but the one that displays if there were replies to your messages is a premium member perk. The one with who has clicked funny, agree, interesting, etc. is available for everyone, though.

As for replies to you posts, I felt it was okay to leave that widget as a premium member perk because it's possible to run a search that does this whose results can be bookmarked or have notifications sent to one's AQ mail.

I really, really hate to say anything that sounds like a complaint because this web site is a fantastic service for a ridiculously low price (even for premium membership), and we appreciate it so much.

I do, however, find it a bit frustrating to have to export logbook items to a spreadsheet to be able to view them all as we could before the big change.

Items in my logbook are numbered in Safari on my iPhone and iPad, but not on my MacBook Air, even though all are using Safari. No amount of refreshing the page on the Mac has changed that. Weird...

Thanks, GT, for all you do to keep AQ running smoothly.

The download my unlisted finds or attempts - is this using Advanced Search?
