When I unchecked "use single column layout" to allow two columns, I had to change my print setting to 80% before two columns showed up in the print preview.

That's probably because your Usability Preferences are set to use large type. AQ breaks up columns so they stay at least "25 ems" wide--think of an em as roughly the width of an uppercase M and you wouldn't be far off the mark. So there needs to be enough space for 50 ems across the page (not including margins!) before it'll break into two columns--which is why you'll never see columns on smaller devices like smartphones (which just aren't wide enough for that sort of thing). But you also won't see them on (most) printer-sized paper if you're using "large" or "huge" fonts on AQ. (Unless, as you noted, you shrink the print size.) If you want to print regularly with 2 columns, I'd suggest changing your print settings on AQ so you won't have to mess around with the print settings on your browser every time you want to print.

I'm just not seeing any difference in the results with the two column options. And I've got small text selected, so that shouldn't be the issue.

Another thing.... Older browsers won't support some of these options.

If you're using the most recent versions of Firefox, Chrome, Safari or IE, no problem! Most people have relatively current versions of Firefox, Chrome and Safari and all features will work fine. Internet Explorer often cannot be updated on older operating systems, however, so if you're on an older computer with Internet Explorer, many of these options simply won't work. The table of contents, QR codes, and hide box details options should work with all browsers on all computers since they don't rely on new CSS constructs to work correctly. The other options... may not work if your browser is too old.

That took care of it. I did have the print preference set to large text. With "normal text" on AQ I had to change my browser print setting 90% to get 2 columns, but when I changed the printed material preference to "small text" the clues print in 2 columns without changing the print settings on my browser. Thanks.

Hmm.... On my computer, a text size of "normal" does the trick. It might be that the print area of your printer is different than mine, but it could also be that your page settings might have wider margins than mine as well.

But I figure that normal-size text ought to be small enough to break into two columns and as far as I'm concerned, it's a bug that it's not! So I changed the minimum width for a column to be from 25 ems to 20 ems. Hopefully that should fix it for you.

I kind of want to retire the screen and print text size preferences completely because browsers already do that so well on their own. Often time, better than AQ can do it since AQ doesn't know how wide your browser is but your browser does know! And browsers will increase the size of photos and icons which AQ generally doesn't. Not to mention that AQ doesn't really add much in terms of functionality. Seems like it would be a lot less complicated just to hand that job over the browser and ditch those options completely from AQ.

Chatting

Dear GT,

Two of us, who happened to be up late, noticed that when in the chat room, in our case, the Main chat room, reached the bottom of the window with our chatting, the typing got to a point, where our words being typed got cut off, and we could just barely read what was being said, to the point that we had to exit the room and go back in so that we could continue the conversation.

We couldn't scroll down far enough to continue - you could only see the top of the words. Is this the result of some other tweak? An unintended side effect from something else? Not a big deal, but something you might want to look in to.

You don't really want to completely delete it....just retiring it keeps the finds in the finders logbooks, if you actually delete it, the box is like it never was....

How strange. "Retire" is still one of my options if I click on Status.

That hasn't changed. The only reason you wouldn't be able to change the status is if you didn't have permissions to change it. (Either because it's not your box or because you aren't logged in!)

Chrome & XP

I can't run any tests with Windows XP, but the color changes work fine on my Chrome browser which runs on Windows 7. I'm not sure what to tell you... as far as I know, it's working like it's supposed to and I haven't made any changes to that feature in years. I'd guess that it's a problem specific to your computer, but I'd have a hard time pointing out where to start looking because I just don't know.

Comments in order of date posted instead of found
Board: Atlas Quest Announcements
Jul 13, 2014 4:19am
Thread
Perhaps this is not new, but I've just noticed that the comments on my boxes are displaying as of the date the comment was posted instead of the date the box was found. This makes sense in a way, except that since it takes an extra click to see finds (and then you don't get the comments), this is the first/fastest way to see if a box might be missing before going after it. Having the comments sorted by post date can put them "out of order" if someone doesn't log their finds the same day. Especially bad if they log it 6 months later and post that something was wrong with the box.

Could it please be changed back to sort by the Find Date? Otherwise, it looks like some of my stuff is not maintained or available. (I noticed it on my By The Butterflies 2 when I went in to post a maintenance item that I had replaced the logbook and someone had a comment after my date saying that it needed a new logbook!)

Thanks and Happy Anniversary!

It's never been sorted by the find date--mostly because comments aren't connected to finds in the database at all. People can leave comments on attempts as well, or they can leave comments even if they don't record a find or attempt at all. They can also leave multiple comments--for instance, if someone checks up on a letterbox that they've found in the past, it wouldn't be a new find but the might want to leave a comment about a problem with the box.

So the reason the comments aren't sorted by the find date is simply because in the database, there's absolutely no connection between finds and comments. On the interface, AQ let's you do all sorts of stuff at once--vote for a box, leave a comment, write the owner of the box, etc. But it's just handy to put them all on the same page since people usually do them both at the same time, but I could have just as well created a "leave comment" button that people have to use that's completely separated from the "record find" stuff.

I noticed it on my By The Butterflies 2 when I went in to post a maintenance item that I had replaced the logbook and someone had a comment after my date saying that it needed a new logbook!

You can always record a new comment on top of that. But it doesn't really hurt anything either if someone brings an extra logbook that isn't needed. *shrug*

OK, well that makes sense, but can cause a box to look like an attempt is the most recent activity when it really isn't.

it doesn't really hurt anything either if someone brings an extra logbook

In that example, no, it's not a big deal at all. It's when someone writes "we couldn't find it, is it still active?" and then a week later someone else finds it, but the attempt comment is on top.

How about displaying the comment date (just like the find date) so that the user can change it if they want their comment to be the find date? I know, they probably won't notice it if they don't log their find right away either, so it's probably not worth it.

I can also just delete the comment. Much easier for you; I just thought I'd throw this idea out there in case anyone else finds value in it. :-)
