Winnipeg Boxes

If there is anyone in MB, just waiting for things to get started up, I planted three boxes out there this week. Not living in the area, the boxes are asomewhat orphaned, so I'd love to hear any feedback on their status if you find them, especially as two are along the Red River.

Hi folks,
I think its time to get winnipeg rock n' rollin on the letterboxing highway. I know Luna and Trailfeathers and myself have each put 2 or more letterboxes in the city. There has to be more of us than that?! I think theres like 6 or 7 in total in the city. I think the state of letterboxing in winnipeg needs a major booster. Unfortunatly winter is coming upon us and winnipeg will soon be covered and thus harder to plant in. But I plan on planting atleast one more before the end of the year. I encourage anyone in, near, or from Winnipeg to start carving and planting! The state of winnipeg letterboxing is desperate...
See you on the Trail!

I have family in Winnipeg, but actually live in Ontario. Next time I'm out I'll try to bring at least one or two more boxes to plant...

It will coome. I know there are a few of us in Vancouver who have waited and waited for things to become more active, and it will and does. Still I think in BC there are only about 8 real active boxers!!!amazing. But that number is higher than 2 years ago!
Winnipeg's day will come. I guess we Canadians are a bit on the slow side. eeep.
Actually, in the city of Vancouver there are only perhaps 1 or 2 active boxers,
so how does that grab you. The rest of us are from outlying areas.

Awsome!, its probably cause im relatively new to letterboxing that I want to have tons to find and carve. Im originally from Minnesota so when i go back there its pretty much non-stop letterboxing. Im sure the geography of Manitoba and its long distance and isolate towns has something to do with few number in the province. anyways, the more the merrier.

this is all true. I think the geography of Manitoba lends itself to isolation so that probably has a fair bit to do with few numbers in the outlying areas. So then how does one go about getting the word out in winnipeg about letterboxing and remaining discreet at the same time? is there a code of ethics that limits you to only telling a maximum of 10 unrelated people about the hobby? this is all joke pondering but just thinking about how to improve the state of letterboxing here. Im from minnesota and when i go back there are tons of unexplored letterboxes just waiting, perhaps there is a lag in Canada, but would hope that that can be compensated for. Your thoughts?

It will come. I've a had a few finders to my Winnipeg boxes, so people are either already there, or know people in the city and look for boxes when they are in town (spreading word of the hobby). There are no rules, but I find it is sometimes helpful to mention it to people you think would enjoy the hobby twice.

The first time they think you are crazy, the second time (after a while) they generally are more receptive ("Hey, I think I heard about that before...")

It took about three years to get Ontario really growing the hobby, and most of the boxes are concentrated in a few specific areas. There are also generally many more finders than planters.

Don't give up! Plant a few more boxes for people to find, and that will get the finders talking it up more as well. There are bound to be lots of future planters out there!

I just planted two new boxes in Winnipeg! Did so the day after the first snow fall, and boy am I lucky. Got about 6 inches of snow within the last 24hrs. Its funny how the environment can put a quick cap on a hobby such as letterboxing. Let the hermit carving begin!

Hey! haven't checked the AQ boards in forever but was browsing today and SO glad to see some new Manitoba boxers! YAY! I'll be flying into Wpg at the end of June on our way to Virden and then Regina, and maybe I snag a box or two on my trip.

CAtching up to some email. Well, what I did in Regina was I asked on AQ for people to donate boxes, and then I went on a planting spree! :-D I think between my sister and I we planted almost 30 boxes in Regina. Then I brainwashed a few family members into starting boxing and I talk it up every time I go back home. Funny story, the SAME DAY I was listing my first boxes in Regina, some other random boxer listed one of their own! We were both so suprised!

Keep at it! :-) (and go take a trip to Virden to find our two boxes there!)

Hello! Im equally glad, to see a letterboxer coming through winnipeg. I would be greatful if you did hit a few boxes on your trip through the city. As im sure you noticed the lack of activity on the AQ board. Where exactly is Virden? Ive lived in Winnipeg for about 6 years but without wheels, therefore missing a great deal of the rest of the province. See you on the trail!

wow! stuck in the Prairies without a car! sucks! :-)

Virden is along the #1 Highway towards Regina. It's actually halfway btw Wpg and Regina and makes a nice refueling stop. The two letterboxes there are planted just a few blocks off the highway as well so no flailing through a small town to find them. The Playmakers have also planted in Whitewood, further down the #1, and of course there's the 30 FRESH TASTY BOXES waiting for you in Regina should you get that far. Time to find a buddy for a road trip. ;-)

warmly,

CrunchyMama

PS another suggestion... why not hook into the library system and offer to do some free letterboxing classes or workshops... a good way to get more people interested!
Arrggg!!! Louis Riel Box missing

Just a quick note, my Louis Riel box, planted this spring, is no longer available as it was not there when i checked yesterday. Pretty bummed, that was totally my best carving. But this is the nature of our hobby. I think the Louis Riel House would be a safer place than at the remains of the fort garry where it was previously located. Will update if recarved and replaced. And thanks again to those boxers who came through winnipeg this summer!

Arrggg!!! Propagandhi Missing

Nov 3, 2008 7:36am
As of yesterday, november 2nd 2008, my propagandhi letterbox is missing. Thats 2 in one month. Bad month for me. Anyways, I plan on planting more forested this time around, perhaps louis riel house in St. Vital instead of the historic upper fort garry (which is still a sweet place but...). The remainder of the month before snow will be for replanting. Cheers

Thanks for the plant Luna! another great box in Assiniboine Forest. Hopefully this one will stay put longer than the previous ones. Hoping I can plant a few more in the park before the snow is overwhelming.

Hi all,

Just posting to say that I planted a new box on the TransCanada Hwy between Winnipeg and Kenora, near Prawda Manitoba. Perfect time of year for boxing, and still plenty of time for planting!

Just planted a new series of 5 boxes in King's Park on the south end of the city. Though normally treacherous due to the river levels in the area, this time of year is just right.

Wow...I can't believe that this thread has been quiet since 2010!! Six years is a long time with no chatter about letterboxing in Manitoba. Are there any new or current letterboxers in Manitoba these days? I have just taken up the hobby and finding it pretty sparse up here...

Thanks Bicicleta Power for your emails...I am planning to head out and search for your plants one day soon.

Hunting for boxes...making memories.

We went searching for two letterboxes this past Monday. What a beautiful fall day to be out and about.

Box #1 was to be at a road side rest area. We discovered a stretch of road that we had not yet traveled in our 7 years here. What a beautiful place to stop! Very interesting to learn about the fires in the surrounding provincial forest over the years. We did not find the box (planted in 2009 ~ last found in 2012) but we gave it a good try.

Box #2 was to be attached to a tree on the side of a lake. This was a portion of the Whiteshell Provincial Park that we had not been to. Again, we did not find the box in the 30 mins or more that we searched for it amid the branches (planted in 2011 ~ last found 2012). But we had the most wonderful ice cream cones while walking the board walk! Yum!!

So...no new stamps in the book, but lots of great memories made.
