Went to bridge day yesterday and got to see my son make his first (and second) base jump! That was one of the most intense, exciting, awesome experiences of my life! We are from the Cleveland, Ohio area, and left after work on Friday to get down there. We surprised him to be there for his momentous day and his birthday! This is surely one I will never forget!

We weren't sure we could get there for sure till Thursday, so we just threw things together and left after work. I did bring my boxing stuff, but my husband and grandson had walked enough miles that they even vetoed the drive-bys! (I did get to check my Tamarack box, thuogh, while they were eating!) The day was so intense, I didn't have time to think of anything else! I haven't been that excited about anything since I can remember!

I am sure this will be an annual thing for us from now on. We checked out this beautiful area and found a good place to stay. I plan on taking a couple of days off work next year and would love to hike the gorge ahead of time. I am always up for an exchange if anyone plans on it for next year!! Yea to my Johnny, his first jump was beautiful!! :-)
(his first base jump, he actually has many sky-diving jumps under his belt!)

Hey, sorry I missed you! We were there, too. We go every year. That's so cool that your son jumped! Did he go on the catapult, too? We'll have to try to connect next year! Maybe my kids could meet your son and see his equipment.. they LOVE to watch the jumpers.

Glad you had a good time!

Thanks, it would be great to hook up there next year! My son didn't do the catapault, I think you have to have 200 base jumps under your belt before you're allowed to do that! That was his first (&second and third) base jump. You have to have a minimum of 100 jumps from a plane before you qualify to base jump. The parachutes are different for each. I think its very exciting. Most people I tell about it think its crazy. Gotta pick who you talk to, you know?

Hi all, I'm in need of a contact if anyone is from Princeton, WV. It has nothing to do with letterboxing but I figured with all the wonderful AQ people who are great at finding things someone out there might be able to help me. Please AQ me if you're near that area. Thanks so much!

I go to Beckley every fall, which is a bit north of Princeton, so that might not help you. Have you tried contacting people on the NC board? Some of them might be a little closer.

No idea. I would like to go in the daytime because I enjoy old, run down bit of history and Americana. I am not crazy about the idea of going at nighttime, though.

It was so wonderful to meet you! I'm so glad we could make it work. My in-laws enjoyed meeting you, as well, though they still don't understand how I could not know what my "friend" looked like or how I knew you but had never met you :)

They also still don't understand letterboxing in general. When I tried to explain it to them for the umpteenth time on this trip, they asked, "so you find the stamp and then what? Pitch it?" Oh, in-laws... :)

Congrats again to your son! That's still just amazing.

Yes, it was great to get to meet you and your lovely family! It was so sweet of you to come over to where we were staying! Sorry it was so crazy!

I know how some people just don't get the fascination of this hobby, but I just love every aspect of it! It is always such a treat to meet someone else that gets excited about it too, and I really appreciate your making it happen! Btw, your carves are beautiful! We actually made it to Babcock State Park on Sunday and saw the grist mill. What an absolutely beautiful place! I wish we would have had more time to do some hiking...maybe next year! Hoping we can meet up again next year around Bridge Day!

Great!

Are you also collecting park stamps for your VIPP (Very Important Park Person) program. All of the state parks and forests in WV have a name stamp. They are just the name of the park. Most are located in a brown birdhouse at the park offices. If the office is open they can be inside the park office and at those with a lodge they are at lodge desks.

Collecting specific ones earns you VIPP membership and a nice jacket. Good for hiking and other outdoor fall activities. Best of all it was FREE!!!!! They send you a card to stamp on.

Check out this link for more information:

http://www.wvstateparks.com/community/vipp.htm

There is also a hiking program, which entails documenting miles walked in WV state parks/forests. At 25 miles you earn a walking stick (there is a cost to this program $15). Additional mile stones earn cane shields for the walking stick.

Hello all,
My son and I will be visiting the state of West Virginia in August for a week. We are staying at a KOA in Harpers Ferry. So I am asking what are some places that we should go see and do? My son is 15yrs old, likes amusement parks and zoos. He actually asked to get back into finding some letterboxes, so we are going to try that too.

Thank you in advance for the help.

I have a few in the area but mostly in martinsburg. Lots of history, c&o canal, appalachian trail, casino with table f
Games and live horse racing, etc.

There are a growing number of boxers in the panhandle. They may be up for a minimeet. I will have already moved by then or would arrange something for you.

Nearest amusement park is Hershey in PA. You also are not far from baltimore and DC which have awesome zoos.

To clarify, I am not advocating sneaking a teenager into the casino playing area. In fact you have to be 21 to even walk through.

However, underage guests can access the racing area, the paddock, grandstands, and a buffet overlooking the track. I enjoyed seeing the horse up close at that age when visiting this area.

Hello West Virginia! I am still awaiting confirmation of my work schedule - but it looks like I may be in Charleston during September.

I would be working weekdays until 5 and then have evenings free for letterboxing or hanging out. I hope to know my dates later today. I'll post as I learn more. The office I am visiting is on Association Drive near Spring Hill Cemetery.

Please contact me if you'd be interested in working something out. If you can't meet and have suggestions I am open to that as well.
