Thread
Hello Rhode Island. I just moved here and live in the East Greenwich area. Is anyone interested in meeting for an exchange? Any great events soon I have missed? Any great long hikes I should know about. I'm having a hard time finding longer hikes on AQ. Any advice/tips would be appreciated. Hope to meet some of you soon. Jenn

RI changing route numbers on their roadways

Starting soon RI will change exit numbers on their major highways. Rt. 295 will be first. Here is a
good website for the info. http://www.dot.ri.gov/projects/exitnumbers/index.php

Heads up if you have boxes that give route directions in RI.

Checked on my Letterboxes Today - The Bike Path Series - RI
Board: State: Rhode Island
Jan 21, 2018 1:19pm
So not to long ago my dad and I went to check on my letterboxes, The Bike Path Series, and when we checked for the first one, it wasn't there! I know it is not a big deal and it happens all the time, but get this; my dad was digging behind the telephone pole, and I was just kinda standing there, watching him. Then I decided to turn around and there it was, literally right behind me, the first letterbox, in about a million pieces! I threw out the broken container and took the logbook and the stamp home. I just blow dried the log, and hopefully I'll have time tomorrow to put it back, good as new.

As for the second box, it's totally missing. We could not find it. But this isn't really surprising, because it honestly wasn't in a very good spot. I have updated it to retired, but I'm not sure if I'm going to replace it yet.

The 3rd box was completely fine. I looked through the logbook, all of the people have beautiful hand carved stamps. I thought I would just let y'all know, I'm going to update the clues now.

Francesca :)

There are three boxes in Brenton Point State Park, Ocean Dr, Newport that I enjoyed getting. All are short, easy walks in the same direction.

If you do a basic search of Newport they will pop up.

Audubon prohibits letterboxes in RI

I have noticed a few letterboxes creeping into Audubon properties in RI - this is a gentle reminder that letterboxes are specifically and completely prohibited in all Audubon properties in RI. This state-wide rule is not always prominently mentioned on the boards although it is buried in the help section somewhere if you really want to see it here. If you have one planted and notice you get few finders, this may be why. Also, if detected, it will be pulled and discarded by Audubon staff. This may be brand new information to new boxers, and good to pass along to save a bit of agita ❤️

Unlike RI Audubon, MA Audubon doesn't prohibit them, but you need to ask permission first. If they find boxes that have been planted without permission, they'll remove them.

Each state's Audubon Society is a separate entity, so they all have different rules. I know that Mass Audubon is concerned about people planting boxes in sensitive areas, particularly those with rare wildflowers. That's why it's important to ask before you plant a box in a Mass Audubon property. So far, I've never been told no. I think it helps that I plant wildlife-related boxes, sometimes with educational info in the clues.

I know I tend to beat this particular horse to death, but I've been a member of Mass Audubon for 26 years, and my daughter was an employee for 6 years. I'm pretty invested in making sure that letterboxing doesn't get a bad name with them.

we should all be invested in making sure letterboxing does not get a bad name no matter where we plant. unfortunately this is not always the case, as we well know. all we can do is to continue to remind others to plant responsibly. so keep beating that dead horse.

Traps on Newport trails

Press release today -

‘Newport Police want to inform visitors to Miantonomi Memorial Park using the hiking trails the following message;
An incident regarding the placement of string and wire type materials across several hiking trails has been discovered. These items were promptly removed.
This act could present a hazard to those unsuspecting hikers and walkers using the trails in the park. Newport Police urges anyone with information on this incident or the discovery of new such hazards to contact the police department at the non-emergency numbers of 847-1306’

I dunno who is doing this and where it may happen again, so box seekers in R.I., use extra caution.
