At one time there was a planter in the Orlando area who was planting boxes in the ugliest places possible. The theme was intended to show man's ruination of the environment. While I appreciate the point, I couldn't stand the boxes. I found a couple of them before I realized what the point was. "Why the ##$% would anyone plant a box here?" Scratched that series right clean off my to-find list.

I am not sure if I want to laugh or hmmm. It is an interesting idea. I have been known to avoid boxes because I do not care for the theme.

The guys and I did go get some of the cemetery boxes that Jamila recommended yesterday. Aside for it being so uncomfortably hot, that was an enjoyable search.

It is very difficult to plant boxes in Florida for many reasons including:

1) Places are very well manicured and boxes don't last.
2) State Parks, WMAs and the like all require prior approval, and letterboxing is pretty much discouraged in these areas.
3) (Personal reason) I literally just found my entire box of Disney stamps last weekend (I just moved). Stay tuned in the cooler months.
4) (Another personal reason) It's hotter than hades to go boxing in the summer.... just sayin'!

You would pretty much have to go out many miles from Disney to find a stamp... if it hasn't gone missing. If I had known you were here, I would have taken you boxing.

This is kind of an add on to the recent thread lamenting the lack of boxes in Orlando.

Reading over the comments most of the reasons why are spot on, but I also think it's a general overall decline of letterboxing here in Florida.

We don't get anywhere near the traffic on our boxes that we used to.

There also used to be quite the plethora of L'boxers here in Florida but sadly most of them have dropped out of the game. Probably the only reason we stuck in it for so long was because of my job.

Anyways, back to Space Coast boxes...

I am no longer working for our County Parks and Recreation. Which means minimal box maintenance. If they go missing that's it, not replacing.

It is uncomfortably hot here. Miserably hot. We usually will not come down here pretty much from May through September. We are here now because of Galaxy's Edge.

Oh, and we are still here! How far away are you?

To some extent, the summer misery in Florida is a function of distance from the coast. Within a mile or so of the ocean it's more bearable. In Orlando it's simply uninhabitable by human beings.

Which means hurry up and get them... the park manager there will absolutely point out the boxes to large groups of random children. They are truly amazing boxes, you will be sad if you dont get the whole set.

uninhabitable

We finally made it to a word I can agree with about the heat here in Orlando. It's freaking hot, what the heck. I have lots of boxes ready to hide, soon as it cools off a little bit, and I can at least breathe when I go outside. I agree with others about the weather, hurricanes, flooding, manicured areas, so many people, so many reasons boxes don't last here in Orlando.

Not true about the state parks! We encourage geoseeking games, it’s a highlighter activity on the website, but management wants to know about them, which is fair, I think. Civilians might not know what is an ecologically sensitive area, so often times they’ll ask you where you want to plant and approve it from there.

Well since I’m from the state of CT where letterboxing is more or less ENCOURAGED by the CT DEEP (they planted over 60 themselves), it is painful to deal with state park rangers who make the process painful.

I wanted to plant a box at a National Park. A permit is needed, yet we did not find a ranger who knew what it was. 😕

I can understand that. Most of the staff (outside of my park, as everyone here has heard me wax poetic on the subject) have no idea what a letterbox (or even a geocache) is, and are rightly cautious (we have found some interesting things in the park). I've explained it to some of my peers, and my boxes I've planted in other state parks refer back to my real name and call sign at my park. The Park Services Specialist in the park is a good place to start when you want to plant. I know some folks like to go on beg forgiveness vs ask permission, and this takes a little bit of prior planning sometimes, but it opens up a good conversation.

I'm not trying to be snarky, I know I've gotten some side eyes from some rangers but once you explain and show them and remind them that geoseeking is a thing on the park's website, it clears up. It's only been in the past few years that several Florida State Parks have hid official geocaches and actively encouraged it. We're getting better, it just takes a bit

I see geocaching info but nothing
specific to letterboxing. I didn’t look at each park. Is there something referring to boxing on a web site somewhere?

No, geocaching is the default and what most folks recognize. I always say boxing is like caching, but better. :)

If I come across the right person to talk to I will mention to add boxing to the geoseeking catagory.

Hi BB!
How long do you have your BOMs out for? Might be able to stop by for it after Thanksgiving on my drive down to FL, or perhaps catch the December BOM if you have it early in Dec.

Today was a beautiful day, and I had a lovely visit with Bungalow Boxer. She has some neat boxes around her house, and the next BOTM is a pretty and cute carve! If you have not been to her place lately, maybe December will be a festive month to stop by. Thank you for added smiles to the afternoon, BB!

From December 1st through January 1, 2020, I will have a special holiday set up at my house. There will be boxes hidden in the front yard for you to find, and Christmas lights to enjoy! I just ask that you do not come before 9am and after 8pm. Bring a camp chair and a little table and stamp away! Enjoy!
