Visiting DC in June
Board: Territory: District of Columbia

Thread
Hi all, I am visiting DC in June for a conference. Since I'll have a little time to myself outside the classes I was thinking of doing some letterboxing. Having not been to the DC area since I was 5, I would love some suggestions of favorite letterboxes, as well as neat places to visit and yummy places to eat.

I was also wondering if there were any letterboxers that might want to meet up. I'll have time on Friday June 20th. My plane come in around 9 am and I don't need to be at my conference until 5 so I have a big chunk of time that day. I also have Monday free after 12 pm.

Thanks, SnowFire

Might be able to get together. Do you know where you'll be staying?
There are some great boxes in and around D.C. It's well worth the effort to solve the puzzle and mystery boxes.

I'm staying at the Mariott next to the DC Convention Center, which looks like it isn't too far from the main attractions of DC. Thanks to one of the clues, I saw that DC has a bike share program, which makes it a bit easier for me to get around other than on foot. How is the bus system? Seattle's isn't very workable for tourists.

And the puzzle/mystery boxes look exciting. I've solved a couple and am very much looking forward to hunting for them.

That's right near a metro stop. Metro, which is what we call the subway, is a great way to get around. The bus system, not so much. Bike share has gotten really popular.
Maybe you could set up a min meet at or near your hotel, and we could use that as the starting point, or lunch time get together?

Not sure about drive-bys around the White House. Security being pretty tight there.

What's wrong with the bus system? Does the Metro go pretty much everywhere? I'll be in DC June 1-7, and plan to use public transportation. Any additional info would be much appreciated.

The subway system is quite good for getting around the core of the city, with spokes running out to certain suburbs. The bus system, primarily because it has to travel on heavily trafficked streets, is slower and less reliable. However, the buses themselves are comfortable and the routes cover where the subway does not.
Here's a trip planner to help plan your options.
There are several ways to cover your fare. I recommend investing in a Smart Trip card. Minimum purchase is $10. You can get them at Metro stations or order online. You can reload it as you need. They're usable on buses and subways. Otherwise buses require exact change. You can pay for individual Metro rides on a per trip basis, but it is difficult to purchase multiple trips at a time and if you lose your Metro ticket, it is a hassle, if not impossible, to recover the cost.

If you're staying in the burbs and plan to go in and out of the city, check the proximity of your hotel to a Metro station. It would be best if you could just walk to a station, or have a feeder bus nearby. Parking is expensive and limited around the stations. That said, one good option is to drive to Union Station (parking is discounted with a validation at one of the many merchants). From there, you can get on a subway, bus, or tourist tram. Cabs are also plentiful there. The tourist trams are fun and an all-day or 2 day ticket gives you on and off privileges with stops at most of the sights, including a night tour option. (IMO, the best way to see the city).

And finally, check into Capital Bike Share. It requires a membership, and remember to bring your helmet. Lots of fun, good exercise.

This is all coming from personal experience - yours may differ.

Grlguides has definitely covered the bases with her response. One more reason to use a Smartrip card vs. the paper card for subway riding is that there is now a $1 surchrge each time you use the paper fare card at the turnstile. That adds up quickly! Enjoy your visit!

Hi. Do you live in D. C..? Would you be willing to receive a postal. I have this postal that headed out almost two years ago. It's on the final trip out, or getting ready to head out. My goal was for it stop in every single state. I'd also like it to stop in D.C. Yeah, I kno. D.C. isn't a state. But still...... If you might be interested, here's the link. http://www.atlasquest.com/showinfo.html?trackerId=8223

Is anyone is attending the gaming convention WashingCon this weekend? Look for a Mom in a Tardis backback, Dad in a Captain America shield backpack, and a blond 4.5-year-old girl pulling them in every direction. I'm the Mom, and I'll have my Doctor Who event letterbox.

Going to be in DC area for a few days next week. Would anyone be interested in meeting up and do a little bit of boxing or just do an exchange? The only transportation I have is the metro, uber and my two legs. Really wishing to find a quilted Eevil box but anything will do.
