After 10 years, excited to Letterbox

Left Seattle ten years ago, and discovered Letterboxing with my granddaughter while living there. Now in Petaluma, and packing up compass, stamp and setting out on a singular adventure. Thanks for Smithsonian Magazine many years ago for the introduction to Letterboxing via UK. Happy Adventures!

Hi Bay Area boxing friends!

I'll again be exhibiting at the Bay Area Maker Faire in San Mateo on Saturday, May 18, 2019, and I'll have a box hidden near my booth.

I'll also make the 2018 two-layered stamp available again for those who missed it last year.

Shoot me a line if you're planning to swing by. If you'd rather visit on Sunday instead, I won't be exhibiting but could be flexible to make the boxes available again.

Hope to see you there!

911 Operator: 9-1-1, what is your emergency?

Caller: (in a whisper) Help!

911 Operator: Hello? Hello? Is someone there?

Caller: (panting voice) I am being chased! Help me!

911 Operator: Who is chasing you? Do they have a weapon?

Caller: I am-I am a Camp Counselor for the Science Is Fun Camp. I am being chased by a monster in a hockey mask. Like, the go-goalie mask thing! Please! Pl-please help me!

911 Operator: Okay, where are you? What is your location?

Caller: I don’t know! I don’t know. The monster killed all the other camp counselors and I just ran into the woods! I am somewhere in Lassen County woods! Ouch-damint! Just find me! Please! Hurry! Find me!

911 Operator: What are you near? Do you see anything? A marker? A sign?

Caller: No . . . No, wait, I see a sign. Roxy Pecomun. I am near Roxy-oh, god! Oh, god! The hockey mask killer has found me! Oh, GOD! There’s a machete covered in blood. It’s in the hockey mask killer’s hands! God, please help-

****************** Line Disconnected **********************

911 Operator: Hello? Hello? Sir? Sir! Are you there?!?!

* * *

Stepping up the podium Captain Slick Kitty, with a forlorn face, turns to the room full of reporters.

“Good Morning,” the captain began. Her voice was solemn.

CLICK,CLICK,CLICK goes the cameras. . . .

“As you have been made aware, on Friday the 13th, someone in a hockey goalie mask attacked four of our local summer camps. We are assembling a series of teams from various law enforcements, the FBI, the US Marshalls, the Lassen County Sheriff’s department, the Susanville Police-“

“Is it true you have a team coming in from California’s Department of State Hospitals?” a rude reporter blurted out.

Captain Slick Kitty’s eyes narrow on the discourteous man.

“It is true-“

Suddenly the room erupts into an uproar. Standing up, reporters began shouting over each other.

Raising her hands, Captain Slick Kitty hisses. “Settle down, now!”

The room comes to slow quiet.

“We have reason to believe that these horrific acts have been committed by one person-one person only and yes, we do believe that this person has escaped from a state mental institution.”

“Does this mean you know who it is?” the same rude reporter demanded, standing up.

“Sir, if you speak out of turn and disrupt me one more time, I will personally toss you out of this room. We have a lot of information to cover and we are taking this heinous situation very seriously. So, if you want to be rude, you can be rude outside! IS that clear?

The insolent reporter sat down.

“Thank you. Now, to be upfront, yes, we do have a lead on who our suspect is. The four camps who were attacked were Science is Fun, Chester Chess Camp, Woodmakers of America and Future Doctors and Dentists . The remaining camps in the area have all be shut down, cancelled for the remaining summer and all the camp counselors have all been safely escorted out of Lassen County.

“I want to be clear on this. There were no children at these camps as all the camps were all set to open on the following Monday. The innocent victims were all camp counselors. However, having said this, there are several camp counselors unaccounted for. We believe that a few of them have scattered, ran off into the forest to hide. We have search teams, like the Lassen County Rescue and Recovery currently scouting the woods, looking for the missing counselors. It seem that it was the attackers intention was to kill. We are not certain if any of the missing counselors have been kidnapped and are being held by the attacker but at this point, we are not willing to rule anything out.”

A reporter from the Lassen County Times raised her hand.

Pointing to her, Captain Slick Kitty nodded her head. “Yes, Besty?”

Standing up, the reporter cleared her throat. “Do you think this has anything to do with the murders of Camp Crystal Lake in 1980?”

Shifting her chin, Captain Slick Kitty, took a deep breath. “While we are not ready to rule anything out, I want to be very clear on this. The murders committed by Pamela Voorhees and subsequently the mystical revived Jason Voorhees were over 39 years ago. Camp Crystal Lake has been abandoned-- left to rust and die, and hopefully fade in the pages of history. And it has remained untouched, rotting for many, many years. Local realtors will not even attempt to sell it.

“Now, getting back to the task at hand, as I was trying to say before, we are assembling teams from various law enforcement agencies. As they are letterboxers, we have no doubt that they are the very best in solving clues and riddles, left behind by this sadistic maniac. On 9/28/19 we believe we will have a small window of opportunity to search the killer's campsite. Getting in and getting out, like we were never there and the killer never knowing what hit them! The goal, of course, would be to solve these clues, determine the killer, save any victims and do it all in 60 minutes or less!”

A cold wind blew as she exited her vehicle. I could tell by her long face that it had been an even longer day.

"Howdy, Chief," I offered.

She nodded, not even trying to smile.

Stepping on the porch, she opened the door and I followed her inside.

"I am assuming that this not social visit," she muttered, eyeing my pen and paper.

"Just here to get the fact," I replied quietly.

She tossed her police hat on her desk and stepped over to her chair. Taking her left hand, she pulled it down and over her face. It was obvious she was tired. In the sixteen years that I had known her, I had never seen her so exhausted.

"Facts, Andy? Is there such a thing anymore?" she asked leaning back in her chair.

"Two kids on Horror Hill said they saw Michael Myers and Freddy Kruger," I started slowly.

"Yep. We closed it for everyone's protection."

"But there are reports of others, yes?" I pushed gently.

Before she answered, she reached down and from her mini frig, she pulled out a Dr. Pepper. It was not well known that the Kitty loved her Dr. Pepper, without ice, certainly not shaken and absolutely never stirred.

Slamming the can down, she cracked it open. The pressure of the release echoed the otherwise silent room. Suddenly there were two shot glasses that I had no idea where she got them from. She pour me a shot and then herself.

"If we are going to talk facts, we drink," she murmured.

I guzzled my shot of DP down.

So did she. She then looked at the empty glass longingly and I could tell her thoughts were deep.

"Yep, yep, yep. Horror Hill has become just that. All the horror villains have gathered there. The Devil Rejects . . . Chucky. Hell, even Jaws is up there."

She then placed the empty shot glass on the table and twirled it casually.

"Since 'Jason' has returned, it has become an absolute horror fest out there."

"But Ranch park?"

Say nothing but arching her eye brow, she nodded again. "Yep, the mystical creatures are running loose in the woods out there. It's true."

"And Devil's Corral? Stranger-"

"Stranger Things is happening out there-yeah, we know," she confirmed.

Leaning forward towards my friend, I needed to know. "Is it true about THE Beast--has it returned?" I asked in a low voice, trying not to show my fear.

The Chief simply nodded.

"So too has the old Hollywood monsters."

Despite myself, I gasped. "The old ones?"

Bringing up her lower lip, she nodded again.

I felt myself begin to sweat.

"But those only come out at night," she admitted.

I swallowed hard and reached for the Dr. Pepper. Ripping off the top, I poured myself another shot. Without waiting for the foam to settle, I gulped it down.

"Ever since those 'Jason' killings, it's been horror-rific," the chief confirmed.

"Have you located the killer yet," I asked, truly concerned.

She nodded but then turned to me. "There is a special operation going on. I can't discuss it . . . yet. "

"So, what are you doing?" I demanded, offensively. I raised my voice. I did not mean to but I was scared.

"At Hobo Camp, we are showing the people 13 Ways to Survive a Horror Film among other things." Her voice was serious.

"And the old Hollywood monsters?" I asked, a little calmer.

She smiled and nodded. She apparently had a secret plan. "Yep. We’ve got a plan about them too--at Roxy Peconum. "

From behind her the clock chimed 12 am, midnight. I shuddered. She stood up and reached for her police hat.

I followed.

Just as we exited the station there was the full moon, waiting for us.

Before I could say anything there was a loud, deep, howl from an unnatural creature.

I peed a little.

Spooked, I looked at her.

"Like I said, the old Hollywood monsters only come out at night."

Then pulling out her six shooter, she emptied the chamber and from a her shirt pocket she pulled out six silver bullets. Having loaded the silver bullets in her gun, she slapped the chamber shut and hoisted her gun.

"Good luck, Andy," she whispered as she walked away into the dark night.

Shhhh.... Don't tell the Park Rangers, but be found a BUNCH of cool stamps at Yosemite National Park.

Actually, they knew all about them, because the Happy Isles Art and Nature Center was offering printmaking kits (and tutorials).

https://www.atlasquest.com/images/gallery/14/75/147594lg.jpg

It seems local artist and renowned rock-climber Mash Alexander was the inspiration.

There was even a box of his example stamps at the counter. (Woohoo!)

... Now I'm really tempted to drop this guy a line and introduce him to letterboxing.

Shucks, when mine filled up I bought the bigger one:

...as well as inking them into my boxing journal, maps, park brochures, postcards, travel journal...
(Don’t pay $45- they’re $25 if you can find one in a park visitors center, or if Eastern National gets ‘em back in stock.)

That’s the one we have too! But sometimes that’s still not enough with all the National Historic Trails and Wildlife Refuges.

Our Aunt took hers apart and divided it into sections. After adding extra blank pages, she rebound it into volumes based on region.

Dear Governor,

I have read and reviewed your plan of action regarding our Camp Crystal Lake Serial Killer. I have heard from 4 out of the assembled 5 teams. As the 5th team has not been filled and is vacant, I implore to remember that we are in need of serious problems solvers, can handle blood and gore and will be quick on their feet. Catching a heinous murderer is not easy and escaping them is harder but still, we must solve this horrific crime to the best of our abilities.

Furthermore, I implore you to remember that we also have a Beast in the Wood Mystery still pending resolution. As you know, the 5th team is vacant and is needing to be filled. It is best for the 5th team to be able to think on their feet and collect and analyze evidence as they go along.

In case you are not aware, since the initial assault, horror villains, ancient monsters and Stranger Things seem to be coming out of the woods in droves . . . Between the fore mentioned and ideas such as Top 13 Ways to Survive A Horror Movie, and Top 7 Ways to Survive a Haunted House, to name a few, there are between 70 and 80 of those-those- planted things in the immediate Susanville Area!

So, please consider this an urgent plea, to send your best, to help quell this Horror-fest in the Woods!

Sincerely,
Chief Captain Slick Kitty

Hello All,

The Mystery Host HHH has been relocated, so close to an offramp, and such easy access!

https://www.atlasquest.com/showinfo.php?boxId=274524

Great off ramp to get food, a park for the kids to run off energy and to take a break from the traffic. Why not squeeze in a little boxing while you're going up or down the San Diego freeway?

Oh, did I mention that the Innkeeper/Host stamp will change every few months, so you can re-visit again and again? You can ignore the HHs if you want!

Hope you'll visit as you're driving by, or if you're down here in October for the upcoming "Great Outdoors Letterboxing Event"!
