I love finding HH's. It's more work logging them, etc but just such a bonus. Love it

Hi Kelsung,
It's just that I would like to see the logbook and know that the HH is okay. And then send it on it's way again. Sometimes, they just "disappear" from the face of the earth, and that's sad when it happens.

Has anyone ever had a HH retured to them after a period of time in the wild?

Yes, Glenn, I have had a HH returned to me when the logbook was full. It was returned by Woody Clowns. I made a new logbook and sent it back out and have not heard from it since.

I have also sent two HH's back to their owners when the logbook was full. One was to a man down in your part of the state, Big Guy.

So, it does happen, although not frequently. -Rose

I always wanted to have one returned so I could see who all had stamped in and where all it had been.

Some of us will contact the HH owner and offer to scan the log book and email him the scans. Then send the HH on its way.

I have a finder sending me back a log book that was full and upon receipt I plan to send a reimbursement for postage, gas to get to and from the box to replace the old with the new and a note to use it for his next slab of Pink Stuff or whatever. (I had already sent the replacement log book) I would expect a similar approach could be used for HH returns.. with the reimbursement being for items you see fit. (in lieu of postage being left consealed in the back of the log book) Your idea of pictures sent electronically is more economical however, if the person sending has the capability and inclination to do so.

Glad to hear that Rose and at least you did get to see your HH for a short return visit. Your result upon sending it back out into that big ole cruel world is the same as I have had. ;O)

YES! Sorry don't mean to yell but yes, I have had H.H.'s returned to me. :) I love sending out H.H.'s, they are like my children. They travel when I can't. Some H.H. are fun and some are very messy, just like my children. I keep hoping the messy ones will clean themselves up but you know how kids are. I have two H.H.'s running after each other but I think they melted in the south somewhere. Haven't heard from them in a while.

Sending out H.H.'s is fun. It's just as adventurous as getting out there and hiking myself. I love to hear from people and the travels my H.H.'s have taken. Some have been stuck in H.H.H's or far off traditionals. Reading about the rescues and the wonderful journey's are alot of fun. To this day, I have a draw full of FULL log books both traditional and H.H.'s, so keep carving, keep planting people, don't hope for much just have a great time. Getting back log books is like being surprised at Christmas time. :)

Have any of you all fared better?

I hear from all of mine from time to time, with the exception of one... I'm not even sure it was released into the wild yet. The person I sent it to never responded to whether or not they received it.

Here's my formula:
1. Carve a GOOD stamp for your HH.
2. Choose a small container so it will fit in most letterboxes.

I find mine get moved from box to box a lot quicker when people really like the carve, and the small size means it is much more likely to be placed sooner rather than later.

Um, gosh, if you're referring to the Col. Sanders stamp, I did get it. I didn't realize you wanted it to be an HH. I've been planning to plant it as a traditional Lb shortly - weather has not afforded many opportunities to plant it as of yet. But I will soon - and give you carving credit.

I put a lot less thought and effort into the hitchhikers

Hmm. Maybe that's the difference right there. I *do* put a lot of thought and effort into my HHs, and I hear back from them regularly.

I never thought, until this thread, about someone ever wanting them returned. I don't really get the point in that.

At the back of all my HH logbooks, I have a message asking the finder to please email me if the logbook is full. Haven't heard back from anyone on a full logbook yet (not enough finds on them, I'm guessing). I plan on sending the finder a new logbook, and postage for them to send me the other one back.

No, it was a request to help start out a new HHH. The problem is that I can't remember who I sent it to, and they've never responded that they received it.

I figured The Colonel would eventually show up on my "Donated" list. :) And the other sad part is that only about 1/3 of the stamps I've sent to people have ever been planted. Bummer. Some of those were really nice stamps!

Has anybody ever had a hitch hiker returned after it has been set free in the wild?

Yes. I've have five HH's return and 2 cooties.
But I've done 105 HH/cooties total. :)

If you've only done 7 I suspect that my odds of something returning are better than yours.

Don't stress! It's the people I never hear from again on the boards, or via AQ mail, that make me sad. :( I figure if you're still active on AQ, it will be planted when you get the chance.

We have a park near the AR border called Natural Falls I think I will be heading that way this summer and I will plant then.

I thought we had a natural bridge here in Oklahoma but it must have fallen because I'm not finding any listing for it. or maybe I went to the one in Tx.

Gee, I hope my percentage is better than that! Still, I know of quite a few that I shipped off years ago that were never seen again, and I'm a little afraid of actually going back through my records and counting up exactly how many! It wouldn't be so bad if I was shipping these things off to people as a surprise: "Here's some stamps! Go plant them!" All of these got sent to people who asked for them, or at the very least volunteered to plant them.

*raising guilt-ridden hand* you sent me that nice horse on orange PZ in return for the state stamp I sent you...and it's still sitting on my desk. I'm still looking for a place to put it that 1) I can hike to and 2) is worthy of the wonderful image. Lately I've had to do my looking between classes, homework, and time spent fighting off the ickies brought on by the germs I keep getting exposed to at school.

I will get it planted though...some day...Actually I have an idea or two, but it definitely won't be until summer...

Yes, it is sad, but people often volunteer for more than they end up doing. It's happened to me the other way as well: I have planned a series, gotten people to commit to sending a donation, and then it never arrives...

I actually had the privilege of returning a postal HH this past week, and it really was a pleasure. I had received it perhaps a couple of months ago. When I tried to contact the boxer to whom it belonged, I didn't hear anything right away, so just kept it safe & sound. Turns out they just haven't been able to be as active in boxing in this phase of family life as when it was released. They were pleased to hear of its status and I was only to happy to return it.

still have a couple looking for the right place kirbert. In fact they are going on a trip with me, just in case that right place shows up. all is not lost. But I can't speak for those I've passed on some of your stamps to, if they planted them or not.

I have one that I found a while ago and between the stamp and the log book it's really big! I have yet to find a box big enough to put it in around here.....I will think twice before trying to move along one of this size again.

*raising guilt-ridden hand*

Like I said, I'm not worried about those I see on the AQ boards regularly. :) It's the ones that have seemingly dropped off the face of the earth that I'm sad about.

I should keep better records. Then I'd be able to look at a planter's logbook and see if it's just that I wasn't listed as carver on a plant. But I'm not that organized. :)
