My kids recently found Slamwich! and love it. I was wondering if you know of any other fun card games?

Mille Bornes. I taught my 6yo nephew this summer and he has his own cards, but he likes the vintage cards better. He's a competitor so we look forward to our next game.

Yes! Some wonderful friends (who shall remain nameless, but who will probably see this, since it is technically THEIR website) gave this game to Katie and me... we LOVE it!

Mille Borne is my favorite card game of all time. My mom had a set. then when I grew up, I found out that my mother in law had a set, she lent me to teach the girls. I always have a blast. hard to find other people who know about this game though.

I've never played any of the games that have been mentioned. I haven't even heard of most of them.

My 12 yo got "Monopoly Deal" for Christmas and we've been playing it a ton! He had recently become addicted to regular Monopoly, but we don't always have time for a full game (I do like the new "speed die" option though- puts a bit of a new spin on the traditional game & makes it go a bit faster... but I digress). Anyway, the card game gives us somewhat of a monopoly fix, with a game that only takes about 20 minutes.
Our other favorite card games are Uno, Skip-bo, Set, Quiddler and Nertz which is a version of solitaire, but with other players. Obi-Mon Keynobi and I played it with friends the first time we met in college. I think our version is probably different from whatever rules exist online. We played with regular decks, but more recently there is a version sold with its own deck.

I have Uno and Skip Bo. I haven't heard of Set or Quiddler before.

I have played Nertz before but forget the rules... could you post them so I could print them off.

Thanks,
GG

Set is fascinating- I know of no other game like it. There is a website with an online tutorial and an online version of the game: http://www.setgame.com
The same company makes Quiddler. That one is sorta-kinda like Scrabble.

Nertz- I'll try to explain, but it would be easier if you were at my kitchen table with a deck of cards :-) So if my explanation doesn't make sense, try google! It's much easier to understand if you know basic solitaire.

-Each person (or pair - that can be assumed for the rest of the rules) has a whole deck of cards (no jokers). The backs need to be different enough that you can tell each deck apart.
-After shuffling, each person counts out 13 Nertz cards and puts them aside for their Nertz pile. -They then deal 5 cards face up in front of them (I have seen 4 or 7 as well). They will use those piles in solitaire-fashion to build down from Kings to Aces, alternating red and black. (Unlike solitaire, there are no face-down cards under these).
-The rest of the deck they go through, only looking at every 3rd card (again, like solitaire) and using what they can.
-They can move a card from one pile to another, or an entire pile to another, as long as it fits -- Kings down to aces, alternating colors.
-When a pile is empty and that space opens up, they use a card from their Nertz pile to fill it in.
-Now, like solitaire, they also have 4 piles above those that they are building from aces up to kings, but each suit has its own pile. So when you come across an Ace, you put it up there, then the 2 of the same suit, on up to the king.
-But here's the catch: those piles are communal. So you have to be aware of what everyone has in their "ace" piles and be ready to put your card down there when an opportunity arises. (I promise, it makes more sense in person!)
-When one person runs out of their 13 Nertz cards, They say "nertz" and play stops.
-You then sort by deck ONLY the aces-up piles- not the piles directly in front of you that are kings down, alternating colors.
-Points are given for how many cards from your deck made it into those ace piles.
-I'm sure each pile has some kind of official name, but I never learned the terminology.
-With partners, one person can be in charge of the stock pile (the every-3rd-card pile that you use) and building on the Kings-down piles. The other person keeps an eye on what else is going on and tries to look for opportunities to put down cards, especially in the aces- up piles and making sure nertz cards go out when a space opens up in front of them.

Yeah, that sounds complicated, but it really isn't!

Another card game we play a lot is Phase 10. It's a rummy style game but works with color and number groups. Each player has to beat each phase and may be held back while the other players move on if they're not done by the time someone goes out. You have to complete all the phases to actually win.

I love playing Set. I recently bought a new set of Set and my son asked for the old set. This is a game that can be played with non readers too.

Quiddler is fun too but I am not very good with word games.

Uno and Skip Bo are

We use to have slamwich...not sure what happened to it. We like to play Phase 10. We recently played a new board game Phase 10....it was faster and more fun. We also played Rage for the first time this Christmas. It is a little like hearts and poker. We really like Zeus on the Loose, Loot, and In a Pickle (Gamewright Games). Two other fun games are Killer Bunnies and Munchin (if you don't mind having your card playing buddies kill you).

It depends on what you like about Slamwich. If it's the real-time pattern-recognition aspect, some games to look into are:

Jungle Speed
Match of the Penguins
Set
Catch the Match
Beep! Beep!

If you're looking for just plain good card games, the list lengthens considerably. Off the top of my head:

Tichu (my favorite game of all time, four players only)
No Thanks! (really clever game, belongs in every collection)
Category 5 (best with a huge group, totally fun)
Battleline (2 player, tense, but good)
Citadels (4-7 player)
Lost Cities (2 player classic)
Balloon Cup (my favorite 2 player I can never win)
Bohnanza (awesome negotiation game, best with 5+)
Mamma Mia! (pizza making, memory game, totally different mechanic, LOVE this game)
Bang! (cult classic)
Circus Flohcati (my new favorite)
Galloping Pigs (loved by kids)

Thank you!!

Some wonderful and fantastic game ideas. We have played Phase 10 in all kinds of forms, cards, dice, etc it is a family fav.

I have made a list of all of the other ones and will start picking up some of them to try... maybe each kid gets a new game for Valentines Day, Easter etc...
