I'm out in Suffolk County on Long Island.

The only real places in NJ I get to Letterbox in are the ones around where I work, in Parsippany, but I like to keep abreast of what's going on out there.

I recognize the trail names of many you, especially the Burlco ones. The Hubs likes to look at all the previous stamps in a log book when we find a box.

So, here's a question? What's the most number of attempts you have made to find a box that has an "active" status? As a fairly new LBer, I still think I may have gotten a clue wrong and go back and try to find the box again. How about you?

It seems like I make a yearly pilgrimage to Mount Tammany to still come up empty handed.

I'd love to climb Tammany again (although, I much prefer the Blue Trail). I remember finding the box, so I kind of visually remember where it is. I can cough....

Depends on your route. The red dot trail is up the side facing the gap on some switchbacks and is steeper. It's not a technical climb, but you probably will need to use your hands and scramble at times. I did it with a three year old on my back but don't necessarily recommend that. The blue dot trail is still a climb, but it's 2.5 miles instead of 1.5 miles. I went down that way - much safer. The blue dot intersects with the AT not too far from the base.

In 2008, Mt. Tammany (which I believe was the first box in NJ) was missing the stamp. I left a random stamp inside. It was a bit tricky to find, but I also have a vague memory of the location.

Next year I hope to go up Mt. Minsi on the PA side and leave something. At least one of the boxes up there is probably missing.

I've been to Mt Tammany, would happily go again but on the blue dot trail only (I could probably get UP the red dot trail, but thank you, no), have only the vaguest recollection of where the box was, so I would not cough but I could prod things with my stick....

I have been waiting for "next year Mt Minsi" for quite some time now. Perhaps in 2011. :)

I can recarve it - it is a simple, yet elegant carve.

Let me know.

Well, I will be sidelined for more significant hikes for a bit after 19 November (Shoulder surgery). So, if anything it would need to be 6 Nov or 13 Nov (weather and family permitting).

Proper order has been restored on Mt. Tammany!

The intrepid alpinists Pink Panther, the Pakrat, Jersey Trailblazers and yours truly restored the disappeared stamp to the Mt. Tammany Letterbox, first planted in January 1999. We thank Otis Friends' Crown stamp from a couple years ago for its dutiful duty to LBX and now hope that the stamp we replaced there will be a suitable replica of the original and appease the letterboxing gods.

The hike was worth the effort, as newer "hiking" fashion trends were the object of much discussion and motivated us through the trickiest parts of the red dot trail. It was actually tougher coming back down the blue dot trail (with the exception of the Pakrat, we are all 40+).

The beeches with their rainbow pop colorations amidst a backdrop of a fern colored chasm was a nice surprise on the way down.

Also - be sure to check out Otis' Friends' boxes in the area.

Mission Accomplished...

Bug Out...
