Hey NM letterboxers! We're coming out from Seattle next week to visit with family and friends and plan to hit some boxes in Albuquerque, Roswell and Las Cruces. We're originally from the area so we don't need any touristy recs but we'd love y'all's feedback on any great boxes that we should not miss. Thanks-can't WAIT to get to those 80 and 90 degree SUNNY days, and the chile, good lord, the green chile.....

In addition to lionsmane's recommendations, check the state mysteries as well. Some of them may be along your route if you solve them.

Don't forget Alamogordo if you have time. There are some nice ones here.

Can you tell me more about the State Mysteries? I looked for that but couldn't find it. Is it a specific series? Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place! :) Our route takes us Albuquerque-Roswell-Carlsbad-Las Cruces. We'll probably head out to Anthony too to hit Chope's. We're planning on planting a box somewhere during the trip, location TBA! :) It's our first time letterboxing outside of the Pacific Northwest, so we're excited to see how it's done in the desert. Up here we have so many forests, trees, stumps and mossy hiding places. what's the "packaging" of choice for desert boxes? Do you camo them in any way? any tips for planting in NM would be appreciated-thanks again for all the box info you've all already shared! :)

Mystery boxes are boxes that you have to figure out where they're at - towns are usually not listed in the clue so there's more to figure out. Here's a list of some mystery boxes in NM-

Boxes out here can be in anything - tupperware, lock and locks, camo bags, film cans, magnetic key holders, you name it. Unlike some parts of the country, there are usually plenty of rocks around here to hide boxes under. Hope this helps.

When you search the state you can choose mysteries and they will come up. The closest one is west of me....and there are 2 that are north of me. I have been using plastic lock type boxes and one was a plastic jar... but tins work out here if you want to put magnets on them. The biggest thing is don't forget to ziploc the stamp & logbook.

E-mail me if you want more info.

Ah, so they're the actual classified mystery boxes, not the name of a series. Duh. That makes sense now. We've found a few mystery boxes here. Considering that there are so many actual mysterious things in NM I interpreted the original post as the name of a series. :) Anywho, we usually plant green camo-ed Lock n' Locks so we were thinking of brown camo for our little desert box. We'll have to do the prep for it on arrival since we don't want to take an odd camo canister on a plane! Thanks for everybodies input-we're looking forward to 'boxing in NM!
