I think I suggested to Ryan that the "proposed" website (I got to preview it before it was officially online) should be named something that was international and not just in the US.

Hence "Atlas" Quest was born.

making notes just a single click away

I would much rather see something like this in the searches. Like putting a check mark in the selection box next to the listing. Then when you have 'selected' your search results you want to save them just click "save".

Okay, I'll get off the sappy soapbox now. But if you have suggested in idea that has been used, feel free to remind everyone of your contribution! What parts of Atlas Quest were your idea?

I know I fervently wanted online comments. But I don't know if I was the one that started that idea. Thanks for implementing them. :)

Lone R

P.S. Because of this site, I am now so frustrated with the geocaching.com forums. Ideas and suggestions get hashed and re-hashed. Naysayers constantly beat down ideas. The Powers That Be are for the most part silent. Sometimes they come into the forums to say the idea is interesting and they'll think about it but nothing happens. I have yet to read something from TPTB explaining why an idea is not a good one. You sir, you are a great example of how to run the forums -- you listen to ideas, you respond and you always provide thoughtful feedback about why an idea would work or wouldn't work. Kudos to you.

I asked (more than once, sorry for being such a pain) for a notes section for members.

That's one of my favourite features. Love the notes section. Thank you KuKu and Ryan. :)

I am guilty of not always providing thoughtful feedback. Especially if the suggestion has been posted multiple times, I sometimes let it go because I get tired of answering the same suggestion over and over again, and figure most people are probably tired of hearing me explain why I haven't used the idea at that point anyhow. =)

And sometimes I don't really have anything interesting to say. I'll just read suggestions and mull them over.

And sometimes, when I know people are going to disagree with my reason for not using a suggestion, I may not explain my reason if I don't feel like defending my reason. =)

I usually try to provide thoughtful feedback, but there are plenty of times when I don't and haven't. *humbled*

How about letting planters know how well they plant boxes by

creating an average box life index average of days all planted boxes have been active if you are consistently planting boxes that go missing in 1-2 weeks and see others whose boxes last years you know you are doing something wrong

Hmmm.... That's a very intriguing idea (and an entirely unique one), but I'm not sure how well it would work in practice. People replace boxes all of the time and AQ doesn't keep a record of when the status of a box has changed or when it was last replaced. That could throw the statistics off. A box that was planted a year ago but has been replaced four times would have an average box life of 3 months--or maybe shorter depending on how long it was from the time the box went missing until when it was replaced. So trying to calculate that kind of statistic could be severely misleading.

If someone's boxes usually go missing within one or two weeks, I should think it would be pretty obvious to them that there is a problem with the plants, and it wouldn't be hard to find a few boxes that have lasted a long time and get a better understanding of what the problem is (or at least talk to people who've planted such boxes).

That was something that kind of "developed" sort of accidentally. The very first post about it (that I know about, at least), was posted to the Knitters and the Fiber Arts board by neknitter. It was mostly an off-the-cuff comment, but it intrigued me, so I pushed for more information about it. The system was used on the Ravelry message boards, but the idea was new to me so I set out to learn about it. Took a little while. Screenshots were forwarded to me--I applied for an account on the site, but new accounts were being limited so I was on a waiting list.

We bantered about it on the knitting and fiber arts board a bit, and I was finally able to log in and see the buttons in action myself and thought, "Yes, I like this." And implemented it.

So I'd "blame" neknitter for that idea coming to my attention. =) Good thing I finished the Florida Trail the week before. I don't usually monitor the knitting board for ideas or suggestions, and I had I still been hiking, I'd probably never have seen that post and those buttons wouldn't be here today.

The downside I see with that idea is that it would tend to encourage maximizing the lifespan of boxes. I know, offhand that sounds good, but really it's not. It's always a good idea to plant a box planning on it staying put until you're good and ready to retire it yourself, but there comes a time when a letterbox -- even a great one -- has run its course and should be pulled. When that time has come, I want to feel free to just pull it and plant an entirely new box somewhere nearby. I never want to feel as though I really should leave the old box there because it's good for my box durability stats.

True enough, but how would providing stats on how long boxers' boxes survive help to enlighten them?

Of course, sometimes you just get unlucky. I planted a box a few months back that was a shoo-in to stay in place forever. It was along a trail that nobody knows about, it was a long ways out on the trail, and the box was 100 yards off the trail and well-hidden in the base of a hollow tree, on high ground that would never flood. First finder found it OK, second finder DNF'd, third finder just happened to find the container and log book, all chewed up and scattered 30 yards away from the hiding spot. The stamp itself was never found. I dunno what I coulda done better short of spraying bear repellant around the hide.

If someone keeps planting boxes that go missing in days or weeks, does he really need to see the statistics on other planters to know he's doing something wrong?

Thank you Ryan :)
There were a few but the two I remember right off the top of my head was
  • rearrangeable members in trackers and...
  • making the tabs in browsers show whose logbook we are looking at. If I opened 5 people logbooks up in different tabs...they all used to say "logbook" but I suggested them have the trailname on there too. You put that one into use right away and it is great! Thank you :)

oh and...
  • most recently is that Next button that I drove you crazy over ;)

LOL
