Hello fellow MN letterboxers. Finally thought I would check in after my trip to Dartmoor with Feminista and Tortilla Taco. We had a fabulous 9 days in the area. The first find was a geocache as was the 3rd. Our second find was on Hookney Tor and was a stamp with signage for that tor. It is next to Grimspound, an archeological site. We were pretty discouraged with wind, rain, and cold. I stayed dry except for my gloved hands. Feminista was partially wet, but Tortilla Taco was drenched head to toe despite what she thought was waterproof. Spent half the next day shopping in Bovey Tracey for more appropriate gear. On that first night though, we were in Bovey Tracey and stopped at the Dolphin Hotel/Pub. Asked about a letterbox and they looked toward some booths and mumbled that "they aren't here yet." Then she went for the box. I didn't really know what she was talking about, but we stamped in and went on our way. It was about 6pm. After returning home and reading some of the booklets I had purchased about Dartmoor letterboxing, I learned that EVERY Wed. eve. they have a letterboxers gathering RIGHT THERE!!! So mad at myself for not staying for a brew and dinner. We could have met them. Some of the best stamps came from the pubs. We just have to go back in the warmer months, that's all there is to it!

Question is, does Dartmoor have warmer months? My wife and I went to Dartmoor in October 3 years ago, and it too, was cold and wet. Not that October is any different than November!

Glad you got the chance to hit up Dartmoor! I wanna go back too!

Woot! Woot!

Hubby and I thought that we had packed enough waterproof clothing for Dartmoor ... but ended up shoping at Bowden's in Chagford for waterproof pants. We were there in April and had cold, rainy weather. But we decided that cold, rainy weather was perfect for hiking and then heading to the pub for huge platters of carvery and pints of ale!

Glad to have you back!
Coincidentally, today, I found one of feminista's letterboxes!! And a couple of days ago, I found one of your hitchhikers!!

That is amazing since we have so few out there!
Remember when you told me not to miss the Sunday Carvery in Princetown? It wasn't until we got there that I realized what you meant. I was intimidated to go to one at first, thinking that all these letterboxers gathered to "carve" on Sunday. I guess life in Dartmoor isn't "all about letterboxing". Well, I was with 2 vegetarians so couldn't enjoy grubbing down on roast beef and Yorkshire pudding in their presence knowing they might not find anything they could eat there. The local brews sure were good.

Bummer! The pub food in Dartmoor was the best! Huge oval platters piled high with meat, potatoes, veggies and everything swimming in gravy.
