Just started catching up on a ton of tv from the library and got into HBO's The Wire. How did this show not become a bigger hit? Why do good shows always seem to fall by the way side and garbage reality shows continue to pop up everywhere? Shows throughout history like Friday Night Lights, Freaks and Geeks, Sportsnight, and Veronica Mars which are smart really good television seem to die a slow death. I think these execs up there have no idea what works and what doesn't. I know it's all about the ratings but if you don't promote the shows, move them from time slot to time slot or start to tamper with them, of course they're going to fail. If you haven't seen The Wire, definitely check it out, but give it to about episode 7 or 8 to get really into it and catch on. That's the problem is everyone wants a quick fix but i'm glad these shows are now on dvd for everyone to see how good they really were.

The Wire is outstanding, isn't it? Are you on Season 1? I do agree that it takes a few episodes to get into it and understand the characters and language, but once you do, it's the most rewarding and complex show on TV. Someone talking about the show said that it needs to be preserved so that it can be viewed hundreds of years from now as a specimen of what life was like in cities in the 2000s. It is the most complete and accurate picture of life as it is now. The education stuff that comes along later is done perfectly.

I always thought those people who say that the drug problem, gun problem, corrupt politicians, and education can be fixed by "just" doing anything should be required to watch the show.

I will warn anyone wanting to watch it that it will forever ruin any police procedural you want to enjoy. CSI: whatever has nothing on the Wire.

I think I'll have to rent the series. Sounds great.
I did this with "Dexter" got completely hooked and watch the first 2 seasons in a day. It's our favorite show on TV now.

That's what i did. Started with Dexter from the Library and got hooked immediately and now have watched every episode. And a few people told me how good the Wire was and so i gave it a shot. And i emphasize they all told me to give it a few episodes so you might not get hooked on the first three or four but by episode 8, you are totally drawn in and hooked. It amazes me that something this good can get lost in the cracks. I mean, it didn't even get any Emmy's for gosh sakes! I think CSI shows have their place because they are kind of cool but nothing compares to the raw realism and power of The Wire. I think it's as good as the Sopranos was. Maybe that's why HBO didn't get behind it as much because they were too busy getting accolades for the Sopranos. Definitely check it out.
