I went with my daughter and the grandkids to see this highly rated movie and where we ever diappointed. We would have given it a 1 star rating, not 3 or 4 stars like some critics gave it. It was about nothing, and different from the book which I enjoyed. It never should have been made into a movie. How can you relate to monsters named Carol, Ted, etc.. Anyway, the 4 people next to us left before it was half over. You didn't care about any of the charactors which made the movie sooo boring. Well, I feel better already just venting my feelings about this movie. Save your money, and if you must see it, rent it when it comes out on DVD.

I took my 5-year old to it today. While I thought it was visually stunning, the pace was pretty slow. It almost seemed to be trying to be more artsy than entertaining.

Thank you! I was invited out to see it the other night at 12:01am but sans kid. I passed since I figured I'd just have to see it again when my kid saw an advertisement for it. So far he hasn't and I am now hoping to keep it that way!

That's Spike Jonze for you. I like artsy, but so far haven't been fond of his movies.
He does direct good music videos though. He directed the Beastie Boys' Sabotage video and Fatboy Slim's Weapon of Choice (hoping to dance with Christopher Walken some day).

Glad you all said this. Makes me feel better. Husband and I took 2 grands, ages 13 and 8, Friday afternoon. I felt like walking out after 20 min. It did get better after that, but I came out of the movie confused as to the point of the whole thing. Loved the costuming. I asked the kids on the way out for an opinion. They liked it! Mission accomplished. The older one said that she saw some of the story line was different. I think I'll have to go read the book!

The book is only 300-some words. Very short. Max gets in trouble and sent to his room, them he simply imagines he goes to a place where the wild things live, and becomes their king, plays around, and comes back to reality.

The movie gave the wild things names, had a whole back story about Max being upset that his mom has a boyfriend and doesn't play with him when he wants. Not to mention the realationships among the wild things, which is all actually pretty deep stuff for little kids.

It's a very interesting movie from the stand point of a psychology major (which also tells you how boring it is). My best guess considering the author felt that this movie fulfilled his vision is that his parents went through a very messy divorce when he was young and that his father had been mentally ill. The monsters each represented him in some way....the ignored child, the angry child, the lonely child.....etc
That being said it is NOT a movie for kids! And even as a psych major I was thoroughly disappointed. I wish that they hadn't done that with such a beloved children's book. And when they decided to go that route they should have NOT marketed the movie to kids.

Ha! I refuse to see it at all after I saw the Wild Things talking, and that they had names in the preview. I love the book so much that Ch Girlie would have been Max Ch if she had been a boy, so this movie is on my Boo Hiss list.

Technically speaking, isn't it the book that "ruins" the movie? You can't ruin a good book!

There is an interview with both Maurice Sendak and Spike Jonze on HBO on demand. They flat out tell you it is not a kids' movie, but a movie about being a kid...haven't seen it yet myself.

i'm 24 and went with my husband to see it an i loved it. i can't imagine taking kids to see it, most would probably get bored. but i thought it was beautiful to look at, and i loved the story. i thought it really captured childhood, and how scary and amazing and frustrating it could be.
