whereas I would classify Rice's erotic stuff as adult first and literature a Far second.

I'll check those out - thanks!

Yes, I was trying to ask for recommendations of "adult first" books without being too descriptive (ie E*A). There have been kids on this board before! Kwim? :o) Just trying to play nice.

Mmmm...I like this topic ThreeHearts! :-)

I've never read anything by Anne Rice. Do her "Sleeping Beauty" novels have "Sleeping Beauty" in the title? If not, can you share some titles you especially "enjoyed?" :-)

Yes. Rice has a triology of the Sleeping Beauty books. Be warned though - very very adult. All adult. They are excellently written and we've thoroughly enjoyed them, but very very adult. I liked the first one best of all, The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty.

As for other books to read, Bondage by Patti Davis was good, but not epic.

I'm glad you do! I was kinda nervous about putting it up. But I guess people already think I'm a freak, so no harm, right? LOL! ;o)

Yep. The Anne Rice Sleeping Beauty novels (there are three in the set) are very enjoyable if you like more steam than a romance novel. They are *not* for those who are romantically shy, if you know what I mean. wink wink. nudge nudge.

The most recent adult fiction novel I picked up was called _Unmasqued_. It is a retelling of the Phantom of the Opera for those who always wished Christine had never run off with that silly boy Raoul. It was actually very good!

So, now, I am on a search for new ideas. I go to that section at the bookstore and look through the titles, but nothing pops out at me. (HA! That could be really punny....)

I have always LOVED Phantom of the Opera (more the musical than the book) and I wondered why Christine would run off with pretty-boy Raoul when you can have the Phantom singing "Music of the Night" to you? What an adult song when you listen to the lyrics. I can't wait to get my hands on Unmasqued!

Just make sure you're looking in the right section. It's not in romance. It's in erotica. ;o)

Perfect!

I'm also glad you posted this topic. It's hard to find really good books in this section. Most seem to be not well written or thought out. Just because I'm not trying to expand my knowledge of the Middle Ages doesn't mean I want to sacrifice quality.

Quote Also anything by Zane

LOL! I just searched "All Central Mass Libraries" (close to 100) for books by Zane. As I scrolled through the listings, I became quite amused by what I saw. Over and over, these comments: "Due," "Due: billed," "Missing," "Lost and paid for." There were a few "on hold" comments in there as well, but mostly one of the others. Seriously, almost every copy were tagged with these things (at least in the first few pages--I finally found one that said "available" and clicked as fast as I could to request it). Hhhmmm...what keeps happening to these books?

I second that! I got mine for a great deal at Half.com. Plus if you own them, they are always there if you, ahem, want to reread a favorite section. Ahem...

Quote I am reading Geek Love because someone mentioned it at the beginning of the summer

I found Geek Love at the used book store down here for about $3. It's on my shelf of books on deck. :) Right now I'm reading Never Let me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. It's excellent.

Here is the description from amazon.com:
All children should believe they are special. But the students of Hailsham, an elite school in the English countryside, are so special that visitors shun them, and only by rumor and the occasional fleeting remark by a teacher do they discover their unconventional origins and strange destiny. Kazuo Ishiguro's sixth novel, Never Let Me Go, is a masterpiece of indirection. Like the students of Hailsham, readers are "told but not told" what is going on and should be allowed to discover the secrets of Hailsham and the truth about these children on their own.

I also found this one at a thrift store that my uncle brought me to in Sacramento, CA one day. I bought it because the jacket sounded interesting but it sat on the shelf for a while. Then I saw that it was on the list of 100 Greatest Novels and 1000 Novels to Read Before You Die, and I said, "Hey! I have that book!" So now I'm halfway through it and really into it.

I don't know if Never Let Me Go is an "adult" novel, per se. Nothing racy yet, really. I'll have to let you know when I'm finished with it. :)

Some of my favorite adult/erotica books are written by Emma Holly. She has books in both the fantasy section, werewolf/immortal type stuff with STRONG sexual innuendo and stuff in the erotica section. I've read them all and haven't found one I didn't enjoy!

I love Kim Harrison. She has also submitted to some collections of short stories - the most recent being "Hotter than Hell". It's rated a little higher than R in my opinion. Very good short stories for a quick read. Gives you a taste of different authors - I found a few I am going to have to check out.

BYW - Thanks for all the great reading suggestions!! We'll all be busy shopping and reading.

Browsing through the thread, I see no one has mentioned Ken Follett... his stuff is NEVER what I would deem "adult", but some of the scenes in his books are quite steamy. Particularly The Pillars of the Earth. My mom didn't know why I was reading so many war novels in high school!

I used to work at the library and Zane's books were Always on hold and Always missing. Other "adult" authors that were really popular and sometimes missing were Noire and Eric Jerome Dickey. My personal theory is that sometimes people are embarrassed to bring them up to the desk and check them out so they sometimes get taken from the shelf. Library staff should never be making patrons feel judged for what they're checking out though. I have never read these authors so I'm not qualified to judge these books anyway. But I couldn't help laughing at some of the titles when I came across them in the back room.

Oh and what about Terry McMillan? I haven't read all of her books but I thought How Stella Got Her Groove Back was pretty steamy. Not to mention the movie. Of course I think anything with Taye Diggs is steamy! =)

Interesting!
Glad I have my own set (acquired over a decade ago)--hidden behind the other books on the bookshelf in the guest room--would be funny if any of my overnight guests (usually parental types) find them!
