How would I carve... phlegm??

Gross, I know... I'm going to be visiting my grandma soon and I want to plant some boxes along the trail that she used to take me hiking. I was trying to think of things that I remember about her and one of the funniest is that she would always ask me to spell two particular words. The first one will be difficult but will result in a nice carve (I'm keeping that one a secret for now) but the other word was PHLEGM. Any ideas on how to carve that one? At least no one will know if I mess up... (unless I decide to just spell it out instead).

you could spell it out in drippy horror-movie-type letters and suggest yellow-green marker for inking

That's a toughy..... the mental image I keep getting is of this white stuff (like pus) that's kinda floating in a pinkish/red liquid.

That wouldn't really translate well on rubber.

Good luck! Tell us what you come up with (if you don't mind)

I also think of a drippy nose when I hear the word Phlegm.

I didn't think about that.... The only problem you might run into with that would be that not everybody would make the connection. *shrug*

I like the idea though.

Hmmmm...
You could do a gooey version of Johnny Storm from "Fantastic Four" and call it "Phlegm On!"
Or you could make Liberace with a drippy candelabra and call it "Phlegmboyant"
Or maybe a glob with a gold medal and ice skates - "Peggy Phlegming"

Just tryin' to help...

Also makes me think of Fleur (in Harry Potter) - they always called her Phlegm.
People wouldn't need to make the connection automatically. The connection can be made in the clue. It should be whatever comes to the mind of the carver.... then you can make yourself sound all clever and stuff.

Thanks, everyone, for the gross photos - they were hilarious!

I think I like the idea of spelling it out in a drippy font the best, especially since the boxes will be called "Grandma's Spelling Test #1" and "Grandma's Spelling Test #2". I have a font idea for the other word also (you'll just have to visit Paradise, CA after mid-August to find out what it is!). Thanks!

your grandma is going to get so much fun and enjoyment out of this!!! We take my 83 year mom LBing when there is no hike involved and she loves it. Now you've got me thinking of a fun box we could do for her.......like your great idea for your grandma :o)

I think my grandma is pretty much bedridden now, but I'm going to show her the logbooks and stamps before I plant them. She has pretty bad dementia, so I hope she will understand it. We'll see. In any case, she will still be making people into better spellers.

Hey, blame it on my gran! It was either that or do a stamp of a bear because as we were hiking and would hear flatulous (sp?) noises, she would joke that there was a bear following us! And then once when she was like 70, she came to visit me here in St. Louis and I took her to the zoo. She kept laughing/staring at one of the elephant's rear end because there was a huge bulge, like either a tumor or an event waiting to happen! So in the toss-up between farts, elephant BM's and phelgm, I choose phlegm! (The second spelling word is actually something very nice, in contrast.)
