I was looking through a catalogue the other day and saw a pelican box.I remembered seeing these on SCUBA diving trips and I wondered if anyone thought of using these as letterboxes,I didn't think of it till I saw that one in the catalogue.

Wow, these are too pricey for us to use as letterboxes. We do use them on river trips and they are totally waterproof. I have tested them at Ram's head rapid on the Tuolomne, Carson Falls on the Forks of the Kern, and my son tested them on Hermit rapid in the "Canyon". They not only keep water out they protect cameras very well. The same thing can be said about Zero boxes.

If you are looking for waterproof at a cheaper price try looking at your local war surplus store. They will have small ammo boxes and if you are lucky you might find some Decon boxes. They are plastic, olive drab, and have very tight snap on lids.

Your right they are pricey but what I had in mind was the underwater boxes discussed earlier.

The tests previously mentioned were very short in duration, 1/4 mile on two and 1 mile on the other. In all cases everything stayed dry in both the Pelican and Zero boxes. We have also had very good luck with surplus ammo boxes as well. If you check the seals closely and remove any crud that could be behind them then they work as well as the pricier stuff. The seals can be treated with Armour all and that keeps them pliable .You should be able to find the ammo cans for $10 or less.

I have some ammo boxes that I've had for a while and can find them just about everywhere but as others have said they are a bit big for most hiding places and they would just turn to a ball of rust underwater.I don't have a GOOD army surplus store near me but I'm still looking for the decon boxes.

I'm not sure the Decon boxes would work under water. They have really good snap lids, but I have found that some finders don't snap the lid down and check that it is fully snapped. Sometimes you have to snap it down in 3 different places. They are a good size and great color though.
