What a charmingly homophobic remark! Actually, most people who own guns would swear up and down that they are in fact, as far from a pansy as possible. Pansies, on the other hand, are a bit too smart to be toting guns around outside of hunting. :)

Oh, my; don't you have anything better to do than push every button within your reach? If your goal is to get the "pansies" to ally with the raging right-wing bible thumpers in righteous anger, with the support of the Little Old Lady International contingency, flanked by the Pregnant Women will Kick Your Bottom Coalition, perhaps you have succeeded.

Your anti-everything vitriol is a bit over the top; why don't you lay off those who choose not to mount their stamps "properly," those who who choose to worship whatever, and all that homophobic slur stuff?

Actually, it's the park rangers that carry pic-a-nic baskets that give all rangers a bad name.

Quote Ahh, but by definition, a Rule Book must be made available free of charge to all so they cannot claim they were unable to purchase but instead just did not bother to take the time to read it. :>

nope. Ignorance of the rules is no excuse.

Like when our city council, instead of repairing the (craggy, eroded, holey) roads, proposed, instead, to make it illegal to drive into potholes. I kid you not.

To put this in perspective, some of the potholes cover an entire lane....

But I'd agree that guidelines is a better term, here. Because it implies "informal rules on how not to be a $#@!@."

Just like how in "the real world" local laws/rules are available for public perusal, free of charge, usually at the local library and/or city hall, such a book of "rules" also would have to be.

P.S. Be careful around those potroads (can you even call them potholes?)

I suppose it coulda been worse. They could have made potholes illegal, and had the cops out there issuing the potholes tickets! After all, if you outlaw something, that makes it magically disappear, does it not?

I believe in my town it would have gotten you arrested. I've certainly heard of a great many being arrested for "displaying a firearm" -- but of course there could have been more to it and it was just our lame local media and their usual shoddy coverage.

We are guaranteed the right to keep and bear arms, but it's illegal to "conceal" one and apparently also illegal to "display" one.

i understand, also realize now-a-days we actually need them for our protection but i was just saying we didn't ALWAYS need them... there are even ways to get around needing bullets

i was just saying... people who use them to KILL are weak / wimps / cowards... not people that use them as protection because... the protection is heavily needed, people out there are crazy

anywho... i wasn't meaning to offend anyone or anything, i should have explained but thought it wasn't needed, honestly if i owned a gun i would take it with me letterboxing if i were out alone but i feel carrying a knife has the same secure effects [to me it takes the same amount of time to get it out of the bag] even though a bullet can travel far

Quote What a charmingly homophobic remark!

I learned something today: Being more than 5 decades into this life, I realize that the word "pansy" may mean something different to me than younger people but never does it suggest to me anything homophobic. Being eager no to offend though, I asked our lovely lesbian daughter if the word "pansy" was offensive to her. Her first response was to ask us what context it was put in. When we told her, she said, "Huh? How old are the offended people?" She suggested that 30-somethings might be offended by this word whereas 20-somethings are definitely not. Interesting.

There are two distinctly different Californias: one where the right to bear arms is feverishly defended and the other that would ban them forever. We've lived in both and prefer something in between.

Quote Not illegal to conceal if you have a permit.

True enough. Does anyone else find it interesting that you have to take a course and pay an annual fee to obtain a permit to do something that was guaranteed your right to do in the Constitution?

You are aware, of course, that the entire concealed carry permit scheme was originally contrived to keep firearms out of the hands of black people. When you and your sheet-wearin' buddies are all fired up for a good lynchin', the guest of honor having a gun can ruin your whole evening.

Later, the state of California took the idea a bit further and didn't issue any concealed carry permits at all, to anyone, for something like 25 years.

Uhhhh, yes, we did -- even before they existed.

Here's a mental exercise worth contemplating. Somebody is out to kill you. He does NOT have a gun -- but he might have a baseball bat, or a machete, or a car, or any of dozens of other readily-available items at his disposal. And he doesn't care if he gets arrested, convicted, and executed after he kills you. What will you do?

OK, I went back and looked over what I wrote, and I'm quite sure I never said or even suggested such a thing. I was merely pointing out where the permit process began. I am fully aware that today a carry permit is considered the ultimate in responsible behavior for gun owners.

Okay Kirbert, I've read a bunch of your stuff lately and just shuddered!

This time you have posted a false statement. California has issued CCW permits, via the local Chief of Police, or Sheriff. While the permits are "State" permits the local authorities issue them.
I originally had a CCW permit issued through Long Beach in 1968 and held it continuesly for many years until I moved. Was it common..no. There were but 14 of us (CCW permit holders) issued out of Long Beach.
There were several issued in Signal Hill, and several issued in Kern Co. Kern Co is currently issuing.
I would imagine that there may have been other cities, or counties that issued California Concealed Carry permits as well, but I do not know for sure.

There was never any 25 year period that California did not issue, they were only very selective to whom they issued.

If you are going to post "your" facts, please be accurate.

This apology is for all those letterboxers reading this board and wondering what in heck all of this gun talk has to do with "Traditional Letterboxes".

I probably could have just let it go, not posted what I did, but that isn't me. Hopefully some other moderator will have better sense than I did and just move the dang thread.

Arrows and crossbow bolts and slingstones...basically, any ranged weapon can help a weak man against a stronger man. The gun doesn't require any strength to use (though the crossbow requires less than the bow, and the slingstone requires the most accuracy, the longest prep, and the least strength [long moment arm]).

the gun, however, requires less paranoia on the part of the user, since it is fast....

As far as not needing them, well, it depends on what you mean. People have died from strong people for thousands of years...a gun might have kept them alive....but if you consider staying alive not a need...
