Quote I didn't understand this part of your post, though. What is a monthly test promotion and what does it have to do with letterboxing?

I should add...for a short period of time...I will take restrictions off eventually....

Too many will box without being careful, I fear.

Quote ShadowSpirit:

She is probably referring to McDonalds. It has been speculated that they are running a test promotion of letterboxing-related Happy Meals with a kid-safe carving tool. It is also rumored that someone is also creating super-soft carving material for an unnamed corporation.

That would be interesting. I wonder if the material is any good, or will it crumble like some of them.

Kid safe tools are a neat idea too. There is constantly a request for carving tools that would be safe and kids could not harm themselves with.

Finally, if McD's is running a promotional, this could be a good thing. It would introduce some new people to the hobby, and I think new ideas are never a bad thing.

Just can't see it. I have one too many plastic Disney toys from McD's laying around my house to believe it. It has to be part of a huge money making promotional type thingy for McD's to take part in it. Now, maybe if they had Hanna Montana for girls and POTC for the boys. :)

Ooh. A Hanna Montana compass that flips open to reveal lip gloss. Heck, I'd use that. ;)

McDonald's doesn't have the imagination to even figure out what letterboxing is - much less jump on the bandwagon.......... they can't think past rehashing the same old Disney schlock.

And if someone can tell me what a "safe" carving tool is, I'll send you $1 - anything with a cutting blade is by definition NOT SAFE for kids. You have to teach kids safe methods to use said tools. McDonalds would never put themselves out there for that kind of potential liability.

And I can't believe I even took the time to respond (AGAIN!) to this foolishness ............. lol!!

Possibly something that you pull, made of hard plastic to cut soft material? No need to send the dollar, just give it to me when you see me..=8)

I am still pretty new to letterboxing. We've just started planting this year. So far we have 13 boxes out there. I'm already a little worried! This is our little secret!!! Oh well, hopefully the craze will blow over quickly, and maybe some good new "mc"boxers will come of it! I know one thing for sure, we are going to start being a lot more creative with our clues as well as stepping up the stealth factor.

I second Mama Fox. Any plastic hard enough to cut something soft can cut a careless kid. Take a plastic knife, for example. I say teach the youngsters to be safe.

LOL! Parents, yes. Geocachers, no. I have no desire to trade in one cheap plastic toy for another one that's been God only knows where. I let the kids play with them for a week or two until they forget about them, then they get chucked in the bin, or the Goodwill bag.

Be careful. My 19yr old daughter still reminds me that I gave away her Pinkie Mouse once when I weeded out toys. And I personally remember a plastic Winnie-the-Pooh spoon sitter that I got out of a cereal box probably 30 years ago....

GypsyLadyBug and I stumbled upon a geocache (giant white tupperware shoved in a lilac bush=great hiding place unless the bush in question has no leaves) yesterday. There was a wacky wall-walker in it. You know: those rubbery octopus-things that stick to everything. Well, this guy was smushed. And half melted. And stuck to the 'this is a geocache' paper. We declined to take anything out of the box. (as usual)

Hey! I still have an A and W plastic straw that has the head of the rootbeer bear on it. I LOVED that straw. I got it in.....1975 or 1976. It is split on the top and bottom, has chew marks on the top and is a bit flat on the sucky end, but it still works, (mostly.) And my kids are not allowed to touch it!!

Ooo, scraphappy, I know what you mean. I have my one thing too that I do not share. AND, my daughters gave me a framed print (quite pretty) that hangs on the wall in my bathroom that says "there is a special bathroom in heaven for the mothers of girls" ... the notion of "someday I will potty alone" has been a joke in our family forever ... so, I hear ya girl!

So, true, Woody. I don't do that. But, so many others do. It has always puzzled me... But, then, perhaps those others get to potty alone at home...

I figure we do it from the time we potty train our own - so we don't have to make multiple trips to said restroom ... and then we just continue to do so. My husband is kind enough to ask all the kids when he has to go in a public place. (I usually don't have to go.) But it never fails that someone will say they don't need to go, only to have to go as soon as the group returns.
