I know there was some discussion about the wild ponies before Hurricane Florence hit, so I wanted to share this. The ponies on the islands of the Outer Banks weathered the storm safely.

“The horses have lived on this barrier island for 500 years, and they are well equipped to deal with rough weather,”

Yes for hundreds of years.

True, but in March of 1962 a level 5 Nor'easter hit the coast of Maryland and Virginia, causing massive damage and killing a portion of the ponies on Assateague Island. That event is always in the back of my mind when hurricanes approach the along the Maryland-Virginia-Carolinas coastal area.

I'm not trying to be negative. As a horse loving kid growing up in Virginia, I was obsessed with various the Barrier Island ponies.
