Tim's Vermeer
Board: Stamp Carving and Mounting

Anybody and everybody who enjoys carving rubber stamps should beg, borrow or steal a DVD of the 2013 documentary "Tim's Vermeer". Around Day 67 in the film, you'll understand why I say that. You will be able to relate, trust me.

Tip: You can probably borrow a copy for free from your local library. If you don't have a library card, get one -- they're free. If your library doesn't have a copy of Tim's Vermeer, chances are good they can get it through the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) program -- for free.

After you all have seen the film, we'll need to have a discussion about whether the process developed in the film can be adapted to carving rubber stamps. I suspect that it can, if only to apply an image to the rubber surface in preparation for carving. Or perhaps merely to generate an image on paper that can be scanned onto the 'puter and then transferred to the rubber using one of our tried-and-true transfer methods.

Perhaps for you but around here it costs $50.00/year.

I saw the movie a couple of years ago. I’m guessing you are referring to the camera lucida he used. Instead of spending the $50 to get the commercial unit you can get an app for an iPhone or iPad for about $5. Here’s a link showing it in use: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uzb7aCCdum4

I got it as soon as I learned about it. The devices take some getting used to. I built a stand and everything for mine but in the end it was just more trouble than it was worth to me. Plus it doesn’t help with the reversing issue. Maybe the commercial product would be easier to use.

Having said that, if you are interested in art at all I highly second the OPs suggestion about watching this film. It is fascinating!

I dunno what camera lucida means, but that iPhone app is *not* the same idea as the scheme described in the film. It is an interesting idea in its own right, though, and might prove useful to someone for stamp carving. And it *should* be able to help with the reversing issue; if it doesn't somebody needs to whap that developer upside the head and tell him to add a mirror image button to the app.

From this website:

Earlier this summer I watched the documentary Tim's Vermeer, which follows Tim Jenison as he tries to recreate a Vermeer painting using an optical device known as a camera lucida.

I’ll leave it to you to decide for yourself if they work on the same principal or not. Having used an actual Camera Lucida in the past, to my mind it is for all practical purposes the same.

Unless of course I’m misunderstanding the thrust of the OP. And since I haven’t seen the movie in a couple of years is entirely possible.

:)

I concur this is a great movie. Though I agree with the previous poster about the similarities between the app and the Camera Lucida. I have the app and find it easy enough to use.
