Several of us were just at Don Carter State Park and all the trails accessed via the gate just past the primitive camp grounds off the Woodland Trail are closed. The Ranger came out personally to make it clear that no one is to be hiking those trails.

According to the Ranger that talked to us, they are still under development and have never officially been opened.

When the boxes were originally planted, those trails were unmarked and therefore not official park trails. However, the rangers told us they were considered available for hiking, and the gate was always open. In 2017 they were closed because people kept getting lost on the trails, and the rangers got tired of tracking them down and rescuing them, so they shut the gate and posted a closed sign. The trails are being converted to horse trails, marked and mapped, and were supposed to reopen this spring.

Wouldn't it be appropriate to mark all the boxes behind the gate as "unavailable" tell they are opened? That way people won't drive for hours and then find that the trails are closed.

Well... one would have to know that the trails were closed first. None of us live at Don Carter either. Sorry for the inconvenience but they are lots of boxes there not on those trails that are very worthy of being found.

No complaints. Just seems the status should be changed on at least 21 boxes to prevent others from making the trip thinking boxes are available that aren't.
