We are a bit sad

40 years ago this month we moved into our first house and within days, went to the local SPCA and adopted two 8-week old puppies, Punkie & Bart. They were our first "children". Over the next four decades, besides our two human children, we added 5 kitties, all of which were strays. Yesterday we had to put down our sweet 18-year-old kitty, Tippy. For the first time since 1978, we have no pets.

Tippy had a rough childhood and he took on the scared-y-cat defense. He knew all of the good hiding places, made kitty-friends all over the neighborhood, and avoided fights. As a teenager, he ran way from home, traveling one household to be with his best friend Boogie. They hunted mice and bunnies together, played with ping-pong balls and snuggled. They also would occasionally go behind the woodpile to smoke cigars. We could smell it on their breath.

Tippy's favorite colors were black and white, he loved the smell of lavender and was addicted to catnip (fortunately, there's no heroin in the area.) He was still catching bunnies and smoking cigars until the very end. Our house now feels empty & we miss our sweet little boy.

I’m so sorry to hear it. Our pets are our kids, too. I couldn’t survive without my pets!

D&OB, I sorry to hear your story.
I truly understand.
The things I miss the most :
1.
when I get home,
Me: "Who's a hungry hippo?"
Them: noses poke out from wherever they were

2. Suddenly realizing that you've been sitting there with a fuzz-face in your lap and you don't remember when they jumped up to be with you.

I have been in your place and what keeps me going is knowing that even though they take a piece of your heart, you will always have a piece of them withing you.
