Hello Michigan!!

I am planning a trip to Whitefish Point. I was hoping for some ideas, input, etc on the area.
I'm interested in rock collecting on the beach and the bird observatory. Looking to spend a night or two in the area.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks in advance.

I have AT&T and had no cell phone coverage at Whitefish Point (unless you count ROGERS from Canada). If you have Clue Tracker, save all of the area letterboxes (LbNA & AQ) in advance so you'll have the clues. The museum there in Whitefish Point is expensive ($14/person?) but I've been told that it is worth it. We stayed in Newberry but there are places in Paradise.

Hi GypsyLadybug,

We drove around Lake Superior and spent some time in that area last summer. And we included rock collecting on our agenda. Here is a good website to give you a few hints:

http://www.superiortrails.com/agate-beaches-upper-peninsula.html

As far as accommodations, we were spontaneous for most nights of our trip and ended up at Curley's Paradise Motel. It had a beautiful view of the lake and worked well for us.

And don't count on cell phone service/wifi/internet. It's very spotty.

It's a wonderful area to explore. I'm glad you are heading there.

We stayed at Tahquamenon State Park...It was a few years back though.
we have verizon and had coverage, except for a few dirt roads. we found many letterboxes and a few mystery boxes as well. check out spring chicks plants! I can talk to Mike for specific ones.

We went to Whitefish point, vermillion, Shelldrake, Brimley,Grand Marais, and Munising.
It was very scenic. One of my most favorite letterboxes was in a beech forest, near 12 Mile Beach campground.

Norsegnome lives very close to there, we had a mini meet before! contact them if they don't see this post, they are wonderful! they have tons of letterboxes in the area and we kept busy going after many of them.

We went to the museum but didn't go in as we had little boys with hands that would touch everthing. the beach by the museum is great for rock collecting and beautiful views of the freighters on lake superior. I seem to remember a letterbox here as well.

We may or may not have a mystery box in the area...hope it is still there. hasn't been found in a while.

you can get good whitefish dip in the area and it's something I will look forward to when we go to the UP next week.

Have fun! it is so beautiful.

After you run your search, select the backpack icon.
you can add that list to an existing list or create a new one.
then you don't have to have wi-fi to look up.

rock collecting on the beach

Is that like "gem mining" in the south? Except free?!?

If you need something to do, Tahquamanon Falls both the upper and lower are worth seeing as is the Pictured Rocks. They can only be experienced by boat. We took the boat ride and it was well worth the price. There are many quickly accessible boxes all around.

A great hike is from the Lower to the Upper Tahquamenon Falls and back, with lunch at the Tahquamenon Falls Brewpub.

A little challenging, but not too bad, especially if you refuel at the restaurant before the return hike. Great scenery!

Another thing anyone visiting Paradise should do is eat a cheeseburger while you're there. :)
